The Secret In The Drawer

Victoria: Grant! You hit me! You actually hit me!

Grant: You're lucky I don't throw you down the grand staircase! Sarah, call 911 immediately!

Sarah: I'm dialing right now, Mr. Sterling!

Sarah pulled her cell phone from her apron pocket, her fingers moving fast as she pressed the buttons and put the call on speaker.

Victoria: *Screaming* Stop her! You can't call the police based on the ramblings of a traumatized seven-year-old child!

Grant: My daughter isn't lying! What medicine bottle was she talking about, Victoria?!

Victoria: I don't have any medicine bottle! She's making up stories because she misses her mother!

Grant turned to Lily, kneeling back down and taking his daughter's trembling hands into his own big palms.

Grant: Lily, sweetie. Tell Daddy where you saw the bottle. It's okay, nobody is going to hurt you ever again.

Lily: *Sniffling* In her dressing room... in the bottom drawer where she hides her green silk dresses... there's a little brown bottle with Mommy's name on the sticker...

Victoria: *Gasping* That's a prescription for my own vitamin supplements!

Grant: Then why would my late wife's name be printed on the label, Victoria?! My wife died of a mysterious cardiac arrest six months ago!

Dispatcher: 911 Emergency, what is the location of your incident?

Grant: This is Grant Sterling at 4200 Preston Road! Send police and an ambulance to my estate right now! My wife just abused my daughter, and I have evidence of a poisoning homicide!

Victoria: Grant, cancel that call! You're ruining our life! Think about the Sterling estate reputation! Think about the media!

Grant: I don't give a damn about my reputation! I care about my daughter and my late wife!

Victoria's eyes darted toward the bathroom door. Seeing Grant distracted with the phone, she suddenly lunged toward the open doorway, her heels clicking rapidly on the marble floor[cite: 1].

Sarah: Mr. Sterling! She's running!

Grant: Get back here!

Grant lunged forward, grabbing the tail of Victoria's green silk dress[cite: 1]. The expensive fabric ripped with a loud tear, causing Victoria to lose her balance and crash hard onto the hallway carpet[cite: 1].

Victoria: AHH! Let go of me, you monster!

Grant: You aren't leaving this house until the Texas Rangers put handcuffs on your wrists!

Grant pulled her up by her arms, shoving her back into the bathroom and locking the heavy brass door from the inside[cite: 1]. Victoria fell against the marble vanity, her hair unspooling in messy strands around her face[cite: 1].

Sarah: Here, Mr. Sterling. I have an ice pack from the nursery mini-fridge. I'm putting it on Lily's head.

Grant: Thank you, Sarah. Thank God you were here today. If you hadn't pushed her off...

Sarah: I would give my life to protect this baby, Mr. Sterling. Her mother trusted me to watch over her before she passed.

Grant looked at the burn mark on his daughter's head, tears finally spilling over his own eyes as he realized how blind he had been for the past six months.

Grant: I brought a murderer into our home... I let her touch my child...

Lily: Daddy, don't cry. The mean lady is trapped now.

Outside the mansion, the distant wail of police sirens echoed through the Dallas afternoon air, growing louder by the second[cite: 1].
