A Real Home at Last

The Maid Who Saved the Heir From His Cruel Stepmother

The morning sun shone brightly through the high foyer windows of the Vance estate, illuminating fresh bouquets of yellow sunflowers resting on the grand hall table.

Toby, now nearly three years old, ran giggling across the light marble floor, his small sneakers squeaking softly as he chased a red toy car.

Toby: Look, Nora! Fast car! Vroom!

Nora: Slow down, little man! You’re going to crash into the staircase!

Nora stepped out from the dining room, dressed in a comfortable light blue dress instead of her old maid uniform.

Richard stepped down the curved stairs, carrying a leather briefcase in one hand and a stack of signed legal documents in the other.

Richard: Morning, you two. Toby, did you eat your whole breakfast today?

Toby: Yes! Nora made pancakes with strawberries!

Richard: Good boy. Nora, my lawyer just dropped off the finalized guardianship and trust management paperwork.

Nora: Trust management paperwork? What does that mean, Mr. Vance?

Richard: It means you are officially appointed as Toby’s co-guardian and the chief director of the Vance Family Charitable Foundation.

Nora: Co-guardian? Richard... are you serious? I was just your housemaid six months ago.

Richard: You were never just a maid, Nora. You were the person who threw yourself on a marble floor to protect my son’s life when no one else was there.

He handed her the thick bond-paper document, pointing to the bottom line where his bold signature rested next to a blank line for hers.

Richard: I want you to have full legal authority over his welfare, his education, and his personal trust fund. If anything ever happens to me, you raise him.

Nora: I... I don't know what to say. This is a massive responsibility.

Richard: You've already proven you're the only person in the world I can trust with his life.

Toby: Nora is my best friend! She reads the dragon books!

Nora: I sure do, buddy.

Nora took the silver pen from Richard’s hand, her fingers trembling slightly as she signed her name on the official legal line.

Nora: I promise you, Mr. Vance, I will protect him with everything I have for the rest of my life.

Richard: I know you will. And please... stop calling me Mr. Vance. It’s just Richard now.

Nora: Richard. That’s going to take some getting used to.

Richard: You'll get used to it quickly. Especially since we’re taking the company jet to Florida this weekend for Toby’s third birthday.

Toby: Beach! We get to build sandcastles!

Nora: A beach vacation? I’ve never even been on a plane before!

Richard: Well, it’s time to start experiencing the good things in life, Nora. You earned this peace.

He looked at the spot on the marble floor where six months ago Victoria had tried to crush his family, seeing only the reflection of bright sunlight and his smiling son.

Richard: Let’s pack our bags. We have a whole new chapter starting today.
