The Reckoning

The Maid Splashed Water Until Her Secret Came Out

The afternoon sun shifted across the large framed American flag on high.

Julian picked up the wooden mop bucket near the kitchen entrance.

His hands were shaking as he gripped the yellow plastic handle tight.

Julian: What do you want me to do now, Aunt Eleanor?

Eleanor: Start by mopping every inch of this wet floor yourself.

Victoria: Julian! You are a chief executive officer of a company!

Julian: Be quiet, Mother, I am doing what is right.

Julian knelt down on the wooden floor with a heavy cloth in hand.

He wiped up the puddle of water his mother had thrown earlier.

Victoria stood near the grand staircase watching in total disbelief.

Her luxury lifestyle was collapsing right before her very eyes.

Victoria: I will call my divorce lawyer to fight this trust!

Eleanor: Your lawyer signed these exact estate documents eight years ago.

Victoria: There must be some legal loophole to stop this action!

Eleanor: No loophole protects cruelty against innocent workers, Victoria.

Eleanor walked toward the front door as two moving vans arrived outside.

Two men in blue uniforms stepped up to the front entrance.

Worker: Are we clear to start packing the red room items?

Eleanor: Yes, pack all personal clothing and items for Mrs. Vance.

Victoria: You are kicking me out of my own home today?

Eleanor: You have thirty minutes to collect your personal belongings.

Victoria: Julian, do something to stop these workers right now!

Julian: I cannot stop this, Mother, you brought this on yourself.

Victoria began to cry tears of embarrassment and sudden defeat.

The red silk gown no longer looked grand or powerful on her.

She hurried up the grand stairs with her head held low in shame.

Julian finished wiping the floor and stood up facing his aunt.

Julian: What will happen to my position in the company now?

Eleanor: That depends on how you treat people from this day forward.

Julian: I will prove to you that I can change my ways.

Eleanor: Actions speak much louder than polite words, Julian.

Eleanor handed him the wet towel from her shoulders with a look.

Eleanor: Wash this uniform yourself before the sun goes down.
