Emerging From The Flames

Out on the front lawn, the fire trucks had finally pulled up, their red and blue emergency lights flashing against the dark tree line. Firefighters were unrolling heavy hoses across the grass while a crowd of wealthy neighbors watched the destruction in stunned silence. Victoria stood near the perimeter fence, dabbing her pristine face with a handkerchief while Arthur spoke quietly to a man in a dark business suit.

Arthur: Make sure the news reporters focus on the loss of the estate art collection. The insurance adjuster needs to know the whole house is a total loss.

Lawyer: What about the boy's trust fund, Arthur? The court documents state he inherits the full estate if he reaches eighteen.

Arthur: Without an heir, the entire inheritance reverts directly to my wife and me. That trust fund settles our entire debt by morning.

Victoria: It's tragic, really. A tragic accident. No one could have saved him in time.

Sarah: Look! Over by the side garden! Someone is coming out!

A woman in the crowd pointed toward the smoke-filled kitchen patio. The heavy wooden side gate swung open with a bang, and I stumbled out onto the cool grass, holding Leo securely in my arms. The little boy was breathing heavily, his head resting tiredly against my soot-stained shoulder.

Victoria: What? How is that possible?

Victoria froze, her jaw dropping open as her handkerchief slipped from her fingers onto the grass. Next to her, Arthur’s cold expression cracked into total disbelief as he stared at the two of us.

Arthur: You... you brought him out?

Clara: He’s alive. No thanks to either of you.

I walked slowly across the lawn toward the ambulance, ignoring the cameras that were suddenly flashing all around us. Paramedics rushed over with a stretcher and blanket, but Leo tightened his grip around my shirt.

Leo: Don't leave me, Clara. Please don't go.

Clara: They left you... but I never will.

Paramedic: Let's get him into the back of the rig, ma'am. He needs oxygen right away.

Clara: I'm coming with him.

Arthur: Absolutely not! She is just a hired domestic worker! Step away from my son immediately!

Arthur marched toward us, his face flushed with anger, pointing a long finger directly at my chest.

Arthur: Hand him over to the medical staff and get off my property! You have no right to touch him!

Clara: I have every right, Arthur. Because while you were calculating your insurance payout, I was pulling your son out of a burning room that you locked him in!

Victoria: How dare you speak to my husband like that! You are fired! You hear me? Fired!

Clara: You can't fire me, Victoria. Because starting tonight, I’m talking to the police about everything I saw in that house.
