Arthur stood near the floor-to-ceiling windows of his quiet office.
The afternoon sun spilled across the polished hardwood floors.
He adjusted his dark grey suit jacket with a tired sigh.
As the CEO of a growing finance firm, his calendar was always full.
Yet his mind remained entirely focused on his baby daughter, Lily.
Lily was only eight months old and meant everything to him.
Since his first wife passed away during childbirth, Arthur lived for Lily.
Six months ago, Arthur married Clara, hoping to give Lily a complete family.
Clara was elegant, beautiful, and wore designer silk dresses every single day.
She always presented herself as a gentle mother whenever Arthur was around.
However, an uneasy tension had recently settled over the luxury mansion.
Arthur noticed that Lily cried more often when Clara entered the nursery.
Whenever Arthur asked Clara about it, she simply smiled and brushed it off.
She claimed the baby was just going through a fussy phase.
Arthur wanted to believe her because he wanted a happy home so badly.
On this particular Tuesday, Arthur prepared to leave for a major business meeting.
He walked down the grand white marble hallway toward the nursery.
Elena, the young nanny and maid, stood by the nursery doorway with her head down.
Elena had worked for Arthur’s family for nearly three years.
She was quiet, hardworking, and deeply devoted to taking care of little Lily.
Arthur noticed that Elena looked pale and refused to make eye contact with him.
Arthur: Is everything alright with Lily today, Elena?
Elena: She is resting now, sir, but she seems very upset.
Arthur: Is she feeling sick again?
Elena: No, sir, she is not sick.
Arthur: Then what seems to be the trouble?
Elena opened her mouth as if to speak, but her hands began to shake.
She looked nervously down the corridor toward Clara’s private dressing room.
Elena: Please just be careful, Mr. Vance.
Arthur: What do you mean by that, Elena?
Before Elena could answer, the sound of heels clicking on marble echoed down the hall.
Clara stepped out, wearing a bright red silk dress and a sharp smile.
Clara: Is there a problem out here, darling?
Arthur: Elena was just telling me about Lily being upset.
Clara: Oh, Elena exaggerates everything, Arthur.
Clara walked over and placed a hand on Arthur’s arm.
Clara: You are going to be late for your board meeting.
Arthur: I suppose you are right.
Arthur kissed Clara on the cheek, but a cold knot formed in his stomach.
He turned and walked toward the grand front doors where his security driver waited.
As he stepped into the car, Arthur could not shake the feeling that something was wrong.
