Daniel: “Take your hands off my daughter!”
The shout echoed through the enormous mansion.
Everyone in the room stopped moving.
Emma stood near the staircase with her six-year-old daughter, Lily, holding tightly onto her hand.
Daniel, the owner of the house, pointed angrily at Emma.
Daniel: “You were told never to come back here.”
Emma: “I didn't come here for money.”
Daniel: “Then why are you here?”
Emma looked around the room.
Old family photographs covered the walls. Expensive furniture filled the enormous living room. Several relatives stood nearby, watching her as if she had committed a crime.
Emma: “Because your mother asked me to come.”
The room became quiet.
Daniel's expression changed.
Daniel: “My mother has been dead for three years.”
Emma: “I know.”
She reached into her purse and pulled out a small envelope.
Emma: “She gave me this before she died.”
Daniel immediately stepped forward.
Daniel: “Give it to me.”
Emma: “No.”
Daniel: “That belongs to my family.”
Emma: “Your mother said I should only open it when you tried to remove me from this house.”
Daniel stared at her.
Daniel: “You're lying.”
Emma's eyes filled with tears.
Emma: “I spent three years keeping her secret because she asked me to.”
Lily looked at the old photographs on the wall.
She suddenly pulled her mother's hand.
Lily: “Mommy.”
Emma: “What is it, sweetheart?”
Lily pointed toward a large family portrait.
Lily: “That's you.”
Everyone turned toward the photograph.
Emma looked shocked.
Emma: “No, honey.”
Lily: “Yes, Mommy. That's you.”
Daniel walked toward the portrait.
It showed his mother standing beside a much younger woman.
The woman's face looked remarkably similar to Emma.
Daniel stared at the photograph.
Daniel: “Where did you get this?”
Emma: “Your mother gave it to me.”
Daniel: “That's impossible.”
Emma: “Then maybe it's time you heard what she wanted you to know.”
Daniel reached for the envelope.
Emma pulled it away.
Emma: “Not until everyone hears the truth.”
Daniel looked around the room.
His family was beginning to realize that something much bigger was happening.
