The Night the Roses Fell

The Langford Mansion shimmered beneath the soft glow of garden lights as music drifted through the evening air. The luxurious estate overlooked a sparkling swimming pool surrounded by white marble and perfectly trimmed hedges. Inside the house, preparations were underway for a surprise anniversary dinner.

Julian Langford had left work early.

For the first time in months, he planned to spend an uninterrupted evening with his family.

In his hands was a bouquet of deep red roses.

He smiled as he imagined his mother's reaction.

She loved fresh flowers more than anything.

But while Julian drove home, another scene unfolded beside the pool.

His elderly mother, Eleanor Langford, stood quietly outside wearing comfortable purple pajamas.

She had come outside after hearing someone call her name.

Waiting near the water was Julian's wife, Vanessa.

Her elegant silver silk dress sparkled beneath the lights, but her smile carried no warmth.

"You've ruined everything," Vanessa whispered.

Eleanor frowned in confusion.

"What are you mean?"

Before the elderly woman could step back, Vanessa shoved her with both hands.

Eleanor screamed.

She crashed into the deep end of the swimming pool.

The cold water swallowed her instantly.

She surfaced only for a moment, desperately gasping for air.

"Please..."

Her trembling voice echoed through the garden.

"I can't swim!"

Vanessa simply stood at the edge of the pool.

Watching.

Waiting.

When Eleanor finally reached the marble edge and grabbed it with shaking hands, relief briefly crossed her face.

She believed she had survived.

Then Vanessa slowly lifted one glittering high heel.

And stepped directly onto the old woman's fingers.

Pain shot through Eleanor's hand.

She cried out in agony.

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Julian isn't here to save you."

The elderly woman slipped back beneath the water.

No one else was outside.

No one except fate.
