The Photograph in the Trash

Richard: Where did you get this photograph, Lily? Tell me the truth!

Lily: My mother kept it locked in a small metal box under her bed for twenty years, Mr. Sterling.

Cynthia: She's lying, Richard! She probably stole that picture out of the attic while she was cleaning the guest bedrooms yesterday!

Richard: Cynthia, shut up for one second! This photograph has my father's original handwritten signature on the back!

Eleanor: What?! Let me see that, Richard!

Eleanor leaned in close, her aged eyes widening in absolute shock as she read the faded blue ink inscribed along the bottom edge of the vintage picture.

Eleanor: 'To my beloved daughter, Sarah... May 14th, 2004.' My god... this is your father's handwriting!

Richard: Your mother was Sarah? Sarah Miller?

Lily: Yes... Sarah Miller. She worked as a receptionist at Sterling Financial twenty years ago.

Cynthia: This is a complete scam! Sarah Miller was fired for embezzlement two decades ago!

Lily: My mother never stole a single dollar! You framed her, Mrs. Sterling! You framed her and drove her out of the city when she was pregnant with me!

Cynthia: How dare an ungrateful maid accuse me of such a crime! I am the lady of this mansion!

Cynthia raised her hand to slap Lily across the face a second time, but Richard caught Cynthia's wrist mid-air with a force that made her cry out in pain.

Richard: Touch her again, Cynthia, and I will personally have security drag you out of this house in handcuffs!

Cynthia: Richard! You're choosing a bruised, dirty maid over your own wife?!

Richard: If what this photograph proves is true, she isn't just a maid... she is my biological sister!

A loud gasp echoed across the grand hall as dozens of wealthy guests turned to look at the sobbing girl standing in the center of the room.

Eleanor: A sister? Richard... if Sarah had a baby, that means your father had another legal heir before he passed away!

Cynthia: She has no proof! A faded photograph doesn't mean anything in a court of law!

Lily: I have more than a photograph, Mrs. Sterling. I have the DNA results from the city laboratory!

Lily pulled a folded white envelope from inside her apron pocket, holding it tight against her chest while Cynthia's face turned completely pale.

Cynthia: Give me that paper! Give it to me right now!

Richard: Stay back, Cynthia! Lily, hand that envelope to me.

Lily stepped past the furious woman in white, handing the sealed document directly to Richard as his hands shook with overwhelming emotion.
