Mark pulled his work truck into the driveway after a long afternoon at the job site.
He carried his tool bag toward the front porch while looking forward to a quiet evening.
The front door swung open before he could even reach for his brass house keys.
His young daughter Lily burst onto the porch with tears streaming down her pale face.
Her small shoulders trembled violently while she gasped for breath under the bright afternoon sun.
Mark dropped his heavy tool bag onto the wooden porch planks with a loud thud.
He knelt on the hard wooden floorboards to pull his crying daughter into a tight hug.
Mark: Hey sweetheart, what is wrong?
Lily: Dad, you have to help me right now!
Mark: Take a deep breath and tell me what happened.
Lily: Clara took my mother's old letters away from me!
Mark felt a cold chill run down his spine as he looked at his daughter's red eyes.
Clara had married Mark six months ago after a brief and quiet courtship in town.
She had always kept the house perfectly clean and strictly organized from top to bottom.
Yet Lily had never felt truly comfortable around her new stepmother in the quiet home.
Mark: Where is Clara right now, Lily?
Lily: She is up in the back guest room near the flag!
Mark: Did she put the letters inside her desk?
Lily: No, she hid them behind the giant wooden armoire!
Mark stood up quickly and took Lily by her warm little hand.
They walked briskly through the sunny hallway and headed straight toward the rear stairs.
The guest room sat at the far end of the upper floor near a window.
A large American flag hung proudly on the brightly lit drywall inside the room.
Clara stood near the heavy wooden armoire with her hands clasped tightly together.
She wore a bright maroon sweater that stood out against the pale yellow room paint.
Her grip on Lily's upper arm tightened slightly as Mark stepped into the open doorway.
Clara: Mark, please tell your daughter to stop throwing these dramatic tantrums.
Lily: Dad! Open that wall right now!
Mark: Clara, let go of her arm this instant.
Clara: She is making up ridiculous stories about this old wooden furniture, Mark.
Lily: I saw her push it! Behind that wall!
Mark stepped closer to the giant wooden armoire resting heavy against the back wall.
He noticed fresh scrape marks visible along the glossy hardwood floor beneath the base.
The heavy piece of furniture had clearly been moved very recently by someone strong.
Clara stepped back with a nervous flick of her gaze toward the hallway door.
Mark: What are you hiding behind here, Clara?
Clara: Nothing at all, it is just an old interior wall!
Mark: Then you won't mind if I take a look right now.
Mark placed both hands against the sturdy side of the dark wooden armoire.
He planted his boots firmly onto the floorboards and pushed with all his physical strength.
The armoire scraped loudly across the floor as it slid away from the plaster wall.
A sudden gasp escaped Clara's throat as the hidden wall space was fully revealed.
Mark stared at the white drywall panel that looked completely different from the rest.
The faint outline of fresh joint compound traced a massive rectangular shape behind the furniture.
Lily pointed her shaking finger directly at the strange white patch on the wall.
Mark turned his eyes back to Clara, who stepped back against the doorway frame.
