The bright afternoon sun filtered through the high arched windows of the grand foyer.
Ten-year-old Lily stood near the polished staircase while adjusting her deep blue gown.
She held the small ruby pendant tightly inside her palm to keep it safe.
Her grandmother Eleanor walked down the hall with heavy and decisive steps.
Eleanor: You should not be holding something so valuable at your age, Lily.
Lily: My dad said I should never take it off, Grandmother.
Eleanor: Your father does not make the rules in my house anymore.
Eleanor reached out abruptly to snatch the red stone right off the delicate chain.
Lily stumbled backward in surprise as the clasp opened with a loud snap.
The loose red beads spilled across the glossy white marble floor like small drops.
Lily: Stop it, you are ruining my dad's gift!
Eleanor: This house belongs to me, and everything inside it stays here!
Lily backed away toward the bottom step of the grand winding staircase.
Her foot caught the edge of a stray decorative rug on the smooth floor.
She lost her balance for a terrifying second as her arms flailed backward.
Lily: Help me, somebody please help!
Eleanor stood still and watched cold anger fill her stern, pale face.
She made no effort to reach out or help the frightened young girl.
A loud door slammed near the main entrance of the wide hallway.
Mark bolted across the room after seeing his young daughter stumble awkwardly.
His heavy shoes clattered loudly against the spotless white marble floor tiles.
He leaped forward with all his strength to cushion her sudden fall.
Mark: I have got you, baby girl, I have got you!
He caught Lily securely in his arms before she hit the ground hard.
They slid across the smooth floor together among the scattered red beads.
Mark held her close against his chest while checking her arms and legs.
Mark: Are you okay, Lily, did you get hurt anywhere?
Lily: She tried to take my necklace away from me, Dad!
Mark wrapped his dark jacket around her trembling shoulders to warm her up.
He looked up toward the grand staircase with pure rage in his eyes.
Mark: You have crossed a dangerous line this time, Eleanor!
Eleanor: Do not talk to me like that inside my own mansion, Mark!
Mark: You are going to pay for every single thing you did today!
