A few days later, Mark stayed home from his law firm to work on an urgent legal brief.
He kept his office door closed so he could focus on the dense legal paperwork on his desk.
Downstairs, the quiet house was suddenly filled with the sound of a raised, angry voice.
Mark paused his typing and listened carefully to the echoes coming from the main hallway.
He walked quietly out of his office and stood at the top of the grand marble staircase.
Evelyn was standing in the middle of the hallway, holding a heavy wooden sports stick.
She was yelling loudly about an expensive porcelain vase that sat on a marble pedestal.
Evelyn: Look at what you two almost knocked over with your foolish running!
Tommy and Lily were standing against the wall, trembling with fear as she stepped closer.
Tommy: We were just walking to the kitchen to get some water, Evelyn!
Evelyn: Do not speak back to me while I am talking to you!
Mark felt a cold wave of dread wash over his chest as he observed the intense scene.
He had never seen Evelyn look so harsh or act so aggressive toward his innocent children.
He realized that his children had been living under constant fear whenever he was at work.
The sweet persona that Evelyn showed him was completely fake and carefully calculated for show.
Mark took a deep breath and began walking down the stairs toward the crowded front hall.
He wanted to handle the situation calmly without making his frightened children panic even more.
As his shoe touched the bottom marble step, Evelyn turned her attention back to the kids.
She raised the wooden stick into the air to emphasize her severe verbal punishment again.
Evelyn: You will learn to respect my rules in this house right now!
Lily let out a sharp cry and covered her face with her small pink sweater sleeves.
Tommy stepped in front of his little sister, trying his best to protect her tiny frame.
Mark knew he could not remain silent for another single second in his own home.
The peaceful front he had tried to maintain shattered completely into a thousand pieces inside.
