Elena pushed open the heavy brass doors of the club, stepping out into the cool evening drizzle.
Julian: Elena, wait! What about your father's medical bills? You can't pay them without us!
Elena stopped at the top of the wide stone steps and looked back over her shoulder with a calm smile.
Elena: That’s the funniest part of this whole evening, Julian.
Victoria: What could possibly be funny about your family facing financial ruin?
Elena: My father’s medical bills and mortgage were paid in full six months ago by a private charitable trust.
Victoria's mouth fell open, her designer umbrella slipping from her grip and tumbling down the wet stairs.
Victoria: That’s impossible! We bought the loan from the regional bank ourselves!
Elena: You bought a dummy secondary loan created by Marcus Vance to see how far you would go to blackmail me.
Julian: Why would Dad pay off her father's debts? They never even met!
Elena: They did meet, Julian. Ten years ago on Route 9, when your father's limousine spun off an icy bridge during a blizzard.
Julian stopped in his tracks, staring at Elena in total shock.
Julian: Route 9? The accident that nearly killed Dad?
Elena: My father was the volunteer paramedic who crawled into that burning wreck, tied off your dad’s severed femoral artery, and held his hand for three hours in the freezing snow until the helicopter arrived.
Victoria let out a strangled gasp, clutching the stone railing for balance.
Victoria: That... that volunteer medic was named David Vance?
Elena: His name is David Vance. Marcus Vance's younger brother. The brother your family looked down on because he chose public service over corporate law.
Julian: Dad knew... Dad knew you were David’s daughter all along?
Elena: Arthur knew the moment he saw my last name on your college graduation program. He told me before he passed away that my father gave him ten extra years of life, and he would never allow his family to hurt mine.
The rain fell softly against the stone pavement as a modest black sedan pulled up to the circular driveway.
The driver’s side door opened, and an older man with gray hair and a warm, weathered smile stepped out holding an umbrella.
David: Evening, Victoria. Evening, Julian.
Victoria couldn't speak, her gaze locked on the small gold paramedic service pin resting on David's lapel.
David: Ready to head home, sweetheart?
Elena: I’m more than ready, Dad.
Julian: Mr. Vance, please... tell her to come back inside. We can fix all of this!
David looked at Julian with genuine pity in his eyes, shaking his head slowly.
David: Some things can't be fixed with a checkbook, son. Arthur tried to teach you that your whole life.
David opened the passenger door for Elena, shielding her carefully from the rain as she slipped into the front seat.
Elena closed the car door, looking through the rain-streaked window as Julian sank to his knees on the wet country club stairs while his mother stared blankly into the headlights.
The sedan rolled smoothly down the long paved driveway, leaving the Sterling estate and all its hollow millions behind forever.
David: You okay, kiddo?
Elena: I’m completely fine, Dad. Let’s go get Mom.
