Olivia could barely breathe.
With trembling hands, she reached into the small satin purse hanging beside her wedding dress.
From inside, she removed another faded photograph.
It was the missing half.
When the two torn pieces were placed together, the picture became complete.
Two smiling sisters stood together beneath a large oak tree.
Emma covered her mouth.
Tears streamed down her face.
"My little sister..."
"You were gone."
Olivia burst into tears.
She nodded slowly.
"I remember that day."
Twenty years earlier, a devastating fire had destroyed the orphanage where both sisters had been living after losing their parents.
During the evacuation, the children were separated.
Emma had been adopted by a poor but loving family.
Olivia had later been adopted overseas by another couple.
Neither sister knew the other had survived.
The torn photograph had been divided between them by an elderly caretaker who believed fate would someday bring them back together.
The older woman who had insulted Emma looked completely speechless.
Ashamed, she quietly lowered her head.
At that moment, Olivia wrapped her arms tightly around Emma.
She refused to let go.
Then she turned toward the shocked guests.
With tears still running down her face, she spoke with absolute confidence.
"This is my sister."
"No one will ever disrespect her again."
The ballroom erupted into emotional applause.
Even the groom wiped tears from his eyes.
Instead of continuing the reception immediately, Olivia invited Emma to stand beside her throughout the rest of the celebration.
Family photographs were taken again.
This time...
Neither sister was missing.
Months later, Olivia helped Emma finish her education and start the business she had always dreamed of opening.
The repaired photograph was placed inside a beautiful glass frame with a silver inscription beneath it.
"Families may be separated by time, distance, and tragedy... but love always remembers the way home."
That unforgettable wedding was remembered for many years.
Not because of the flowers...
Not because of the luxury...
But because one torn photograph reunited two sisters who had spent twenty years searching for each other.
