Richard continued insisting Lily had stolen the necklace.

Instead, another guest quietly slipped the diamond necklace into a champagne bucket after creating a distraction.

Richard's face turned pale.

Police officers escorted the real thief from the gala while stunned guests watched in silence.
Richard slowly approached Evelyn and Lily.
He lowered his head.
"I'm sorry."
Lily looked up at her mother.
"Do I have to forgive him?"
Evelyn smiled gently.
"Forgiveness is your choice."
"But never let anyone make you believe you're guilty when you've done nothing wrong."
Many guests applauded.
Several parents thanked Evelyn for defending her daughter when no one else would.
Weeks later, the gala organisers invited Lily back as the guest of honour for their children's charity event.
Richard made a public apology and donated generously to the organisation supporting disadvantaged children.
As they left the ballroom hand in hand, Lily smiled.

Evelyn squeezed her hand.
