The Grand Royale Hotel was preparing for its biggest charity banquet of the year. Inside the massive industrial kitchen, dozens of chefs hurried between stainless-steel counters while waiters carried elegant dishes toward the ballroom upstairs. Orders were shouted across the room, pots hissed over open flames, and every second mattered.
Among the busy staff stood Valeria Stone, the hotel's head pastry chef.
Known for her incredible desserts and quiet personality, Valeria rarely spoke about her personal life. Most employees only knew she worked long hours and raised a young daughter alone.
That afternoon, however, everything changed.
Valeria stood at the stainless-steel sink with tears streaming down her face. Her hands shook as she tried to wash blood from her apron before anyone noticed. Every movement sent pain across her cheek where a fresh purple bruise had already begun to spread.
The kitchen staff looked uncomfortable but remained silent.
No one wanted to challenge Isabella Hart, the glamorous woman wearing a sparkling pink sequin dress who had been walking through the kitchen giving orders despite not working there.
Isabella smiled confidently while watching Valeria cry.
"You should remember where you belong," she had whispered only moments earlier.
Before anyone could speak, the kitchen doors opened.
Daniel Carter, owner of the Grand Royale Hotel, stepped inside wearing a navy suit after finishing a meeting with investors.
He immediately noticed Valeria.
"Valeria... what's going on?"
His concerned voice echoed through the suddenly silent kitchen.
Valeria looked down, trying to hide her face.
Before she could answer, Isabella hurried between them with a bright, rehearsed smile.
"Oh, come on," she laughed.
"She's just trying to help."
Daniel frowned.
Something about the scene felt completely wrong.
The frightened expression on Valeria's face told a very different story.
