The Grand Monarch Hotel glittered beneath towering crystal chandeliers as wealthy guests enjoyed an elegant charity gala. A white grand piano filled the marble lobby with soft music while servers carried silver trays of desserts through the crowd. Expensive gowns and tailored tuxedos blended perfectly with the hotel's gold-trimmed walls and polished floors.
Outside, eleven-year-old Ava struggled to pull a torn plastic bag filled with empty soda cans.
Every can inside represented hours of searching through trash bins.
She planned to recycle them for enough money to buy medicine for her sick mother.
As she passed the hotel's glass entrance, the smell of warm chocolate cake drifted outside.
Her stomach growled.
She hadn't eaten since the previous afternoon.
After gathering every bit of courage she had, Ava slowly stepped inside.
Guests immediately turned to stare.
Her faded dress and worn shoes looked painfully out of place among the elegant crowd.
Ignoring the whispers, Ava carefully walked toward the dessert buffet.
She smiled shyly.
"Can I please have..."
Before she could finish speaking, a uniformed security guard stepped in front of her.
"Hey!"
"You can't be in here!"
Startled, Ava clutched one of the empty cans against her chest.
"I'm sorry..."
she whispered.
The room grew uncomfortably quiet.
Most guests looked away.
Others watched without saying a word.
Just then...
The elevator doors opened with a soft chime.
A tall man wearing a black tuxedo stepped into the lobby.
His eyes immediately landed on the frightened little girl.
Then he stopped walking.
