The grand living room of the Harrington estate glowed beneath elegant crystal chandeliers. Marble floors reflected the afternoon sunlight while expensive artwork decorated every wall. It was a house filled with luxury, but for seven-year-old Ben, none of that mattered.
Today was special.
He clutched a small brown paper package tightly against his chest as he waited near the staircase.
Inside was something he had spent weeks creating.
Not an expensive toy.
Not a store-bought gift.
Just a hand-drawn picture made with crayons, carefully folded inside brown paper.
When his father, Daniel Harrington, walked into the room wearing a blue button-down shirt after a business meeting, Ben's face lit up.
"Dad!"
He ran forward and held out the package with both hands.
"I made this for you."
Daniel smiled warmly and reached toward the gift.
Before he could open it, another hand suddenly appeared.
His wife, Vanessa, took the package first.
She glanced at the wrinkled brown paper with obvious disgust.
"What is this?"
Ben smiled nervously.
"It's for Dad."
Vanessa didn't even bother opening it.
With a careless flick of her wrist, she tossed the package into a nearby stainless steel trash can.
The dull thud echoed through the silent room.
Ben froze.
His smile disappeared.
His tiny mouth fell open in disbelief.
For a moment, he couldn't even breathe.
Then tears filled his eyes.
Without saying a word, he turned and ran toward the trash can.
Daniel watched in confusion.
"Ben?"
The little boy dropped to his knees beside the bin, desperately searching through the trash.
Behind him, Vanessa folded her arms with a smug smile.
"It was probably just another childish mess."
Daniel frowned.
Something about Ben's reaction told him this wasn't just a piece of paper.
It was something much more important.
