A heavy, suffocating silence descended over the sprawling kitchen, broken only by the low hum of the twin refrigerators.
Julian: Clara, don't be ridiculous. I don't drink chamomile tea. It gives me heartburn.
Clara: Drink it, Julian. If it is the wholesome family remedy you claimed it was five minutes ago, pour a mug and swallow it.
Evelyn: Julian, do not lower your dignity to humor this hysterical nonsense.
Maya: He won't touch a single drop of it, Clara. Because he knows the concentration in that kettle is lethal enough to cause severe kidney failure in an adult man.
Julian: Shut up, Maya! Stop manipulating my wife!
Clara: Walk over to the stove, Julian. Pick up a clean mug from the cabinet and drink the tea you brewed for me and our child.
Julian stared at the stainless steel kettle, his throat bobbing as he swallowed hard, his face turning an ash-gray shade beneath the recessed ceiling lights.
Julian: I am the master of this estate. I do not have to perform circus tricks to satisfy paranoid accusations.
Clara: You can't drink it. Because everything Maya said is true.
Julian reached toward Clara’s wrist with sudden force, his polished mask completely shattering into raw fury.
Julian: You listen to me, Clara. You will sign the amended prenuptial agreement this afternoon, or you walk out of those gates with nothing but the clothes on your back!
Clara: Let go of my wrist, Julian!
Clara pulled back with all her strength, her palm swinging across the air and cracking hard against Julian's cheekbone.
The slap echoed like a gunshot through the vaulted kitchen ceiling, leaving a bright red handprint across Julian’s pale face.
Julian: You dared to lay a hand on me?
Evelyn: How dare you strike my son! You ungrateful street beggar!
Evelyn raised her leather handbag to strike Clara, but Maya stepped forward instantly, catching Evelyn’s arm and shoving her backward onto the barstools.
Maya: Don't you dare touch her, Evelyn!
Julian: Both of you get the hell out of my home right now before I have the security detail drag you into the street!
In the distance, the sharp wail of emergency sirens cut through the quiet trees surrounding the Vance estate.
Julian: What is that noise? Evelyn, did you call the private guards?
Evelyn: I told them to handle this quietly! Those are not estate sirens!
Maya: Those are state troopers and county paramedics, Julian. I called nine-one-one from my car before I jumped your perimeter gate.
Julian: You called the state police to my private residence? Are you completely insane?
Maya: I reported an active domestic poisoning and aggravated assault against an expectant mother. They brought emergency toxin response kits.
Tires screeched aggressively across the gravel driveway outside, followed by the heavy thud of multiple car doors slamming shut.
Julian: Clara, come here right now. We are going out the garden doors before they come inside.
Clara: I am not going anywhere with you, Julian. Ever again.
Heavy boots pounded up the front stone steps, and loud, authoritative fists hammered against the mahogany front doors.
State Trooper: State Police! Open the door immediately!
