The Shadow Over the Mansion

The Cruel Stepmother Tried to Destroy His Only Heir

The morning sun shone brightly through the tall foyer windows of the grand estate.

Richard sat in his office, reading over the new legal documents for his family trust fund.

His daughter Maya was playing quietly with her toy blocks on the soft wool rug near his desk.

She was only three years old and looked just like her mother who had passed away two years ago.

Richard loved his little girl more than anything else in the entire world.

He worked hard as the chief executive officer of his family business to protect her future.

A quiet knock sounded at the heavy wooden door of the spacious private office.

Elena, the young housemaid, walked into the room carrying a fresh tray of morning tea.

She set the silver tray down carefully on the polished dark oak table near the window.

Elena: Good morning, Mr. Vance, I brought your hot tea.

Richard: Thank you, Elena, you can leave it right there.

Elena: Little Maya looks very happy playing with her colorful blocks today.

Richard: She is the light of my life, Elena.

Elena: She has her mother's kind eyes and warm gentle smile.

Richard smiled warmly as he watched his young daughter build a small colorful tower.

He felt a sudden ache in his heart whenever he remembered his late wife's loving voice.

He had married Victoria six months ago, hoping to bring a caring mother figure into Maya's life.

However, Victoria was cold and distant whenever Richard was not present in the room.

She showed little interest in the child and often complained about the nanny's duties.

The heavy office door suddenly swung open, and Victoria stepped gracefully into the room.

She wore an expensive peach dress and designer jewelry that glittered brightly in the sun.

Victoria: Richard darling, you are working far too hard on these dusty papers again.

Richard: I am finalizing the trust fund arrangements for Maya's future estate.

Victoria: You spend so much time worrying about a little child's money.

Richard: She is my only child and the rightful heir to this entire estate.

Victoria: Of course, but we should also think about our own future plans together.

Victoria crossed her arms tight and looked down at Elena with cold, dismissive eyes.

Victoria: Why are you still standing here idling around, housemaid?

Elena: I was just leaving to finish cleaning the upper hallway, ma'am.

Victoria: Then go do your job and take those dirty tea cups with you.

Elena bowed her head politely and picked up the empty wooden tray from the counter.

She felt a cold chill run down her spine as she passed by Victoria in the hallway.

She had noticed how Victoria looked at little Maya when Richard was out of town.

Victoria always viewed the little girl as a threat to her own financial standing.

If anything ever happened to Maya, Victoria would inherit the entire multi-million dollar estate.

Elena resolved to keep a very close eye on the sweet child at all times.

She knew that money could make desperate people do very terrible and dark things.

She carried her tray down the quiet corridor toward the main kitchen on the ground floor.

Outside, the sun continued to pour warmth over the sprawling green lawn of the estate.

Yet inside the house, an uneasy feeling began to settle deep within the quiet rooms.

Richard adjusted his blue tie and stood up from his dark leather desk chair.

Richard: I have an urgent meeting with my legal team in the city today.

Victoria: Will you be away from the estate for the entire afternoon, darling?

Richard: Yes, I should return home before five o'clock this evening.

Victoria: Do not worry about a thing while you are away in the city.

Victoria: I will personally look after little Maya while the staff cleans up.

Richard looked at Victoria for a long moment, sensing a strange tone in her voice.

He shook off the doubtful thought and picked up his heavy leather briefcase.

He bent down to kiss Maya gently on her forehead before leaving the office room.

Richard: Be a good girl for the nanny today, my little princess.

Maya: Bye-bye, Daddy, come back home soon!

Richard walked down the main staircase and left through the front entrance doors.

Victoria stood on the landing, watching his car pull out of the long drive.

A cold, scheming smile spread slowly across her face as the gates closed shut.
