Mark met them at the entryway while holding the digital recorder in his hand.
Mark: Officers, thank you for arriving so quickly.
Officer Davis: We received a call regarding child endangerment at this residence.
Mark: Here is the full audio recording from thirty minutes ago.
The officers listened to the crisp playback of Evelyn's harsh instructions.
Officer Davis turned toward Evelyn with a very stern look on his face.
Officer Davis: Ma'am, you need to step out to the driveway with us.
Evelyn: You cannot arrest me in my own home!
Officer Davis: You are being detained for endangerment and neglect.
Evelyn looked at Mark with pleading eyes as the officer escorted her forward.
Evelyn: Mark, please talk to them! We can fix this together!
Mark: You had your chance to protect my child, Evelyn.

The officers led Evelyn down the wide marble steps toward the waiting squad car.
Chloe stood by the front window with a small suitcase packed by her side.
Mark walked over to his stepdaughter and placed a gentle hand on her arm.
