The Stranger the Children Ran To

The city square buzzed with life on a bright Saturday afternoon. Street musicians performed near fountains while tourists snapped photographs of historic buildings surrounding the plaza. Pigeons scattered across the pavement as children laughed and chased one another beneath the warm sunlight.

Mark and Olivia Bennett were enjoying a family outing with their three daughters.

Eight-year-old Emma.

Seven-year-old Sophie.

And six-year-old Lily.

The sisters were inseparable.

As the family crossed the plaza, the girls suddenly stopped walking.

All three stared toward the far end of the square.

Sitting alone on a set of worn stone steps was an elderly woman dressed in old clothes. A small blanket rested across her lap, and beside her sat a faded shopping bag containing everything she owned.

The girls exchanged glances.

Then, without warning, they started running.

"Girls!"

Mark called after them.

But they didn't stop.

Pigeons exploded into the air as the sisters raced across the square.

People turned to watch.

The children weren't frightened.

They looked excited.

Determined.

The elderly woman noticed them approaching and looked around in confusion.

Surely they couldn't be running toward her.

But seconds later, all three girls reached the steps and threw their arms around her.

The woman gasped.

Her eyes widened in disbelief.

She had never seen these children before.

Yet they hugged her as though they had known her their entire lives.

Olivia hurried forward.

"Oh my God..."

The old woman sat frozen while tiny hands touched her face.

One child brushed away a tear.

Another rested her head against the woman's shoulder.

The third simply refused to let go.

No one understood what was happening.

Least of all the elderly woman herself.
