The polished marble floor of the Grand Imperial Hotel gleamed under the high crystal chandeliers, reflecting the soft glow of warm lights. Daniel Sterling straightened the cuffs of his navy blue designer suit as he walked through the wide luxury hallway. Beside him was Victoria Vance, an heiress in a striking red dress, laughing softly as she held his arm.
Victoria: Daniel, the board members are already waiting in the private suite upstairs.
Daniel: Let them wait five minutes, Victoria. My company controls forty percent of the hotel's voting stock.
Victoria: Still, your father wants this merger finalized before the charity gala tonight.
Daniel checked his phone, scrolling through urgent emails from his corporate lawyers about his family's multi-million dollar estate. He didn't notice the heavy metal housekeeping cart rolling slowly out from the service alcove. The heavy cart collided directly with Daniel's side, knocking his phone straight out of his hand.
Daniel: Watch where you're going!
The maid behind the cart gasped, her hands shaking as she pulled the heavy trolley back. She wore a faded blue hotel uniform, her dark hair tied back in a messy bun. She immediately bent down, her hands trembling as she picked up his phone from the floor.
Lucia: I'm so sorry, sir! I didn't see you coming around the corner!
Victoria: Mindless girl. You almost ruined his suit!
Lucia: Please forgive me... I'll clean the scuff mark right away...
Daniel froze as the timid voice echoed through the ornate corridor. He slowly looked down, his eyes dropping from her anxious face to her hands gripped tightly on the metal cart handle. The front of her apron bulged out prominently. She was heavily pregnant, at least seven months along.
Daniel: Lucia?
Lucia looked up, her face turning deathly pale as her eyes met his. A tear slipped down her cheek, leaving a faint streak through the light dust on her skin. She clutched her apron tightly, stepping back into the shadow of the cart.
Lucia: Is everything... alright with the service, sir?
Daniel: What are you doing here?
Victoria: Daniel? What is going on? Do you know her?
Daniel stared at Lucia in total disbelief, his mind racing back to the rainy night six months ago when his mother claimed Lucia had taken ten million dollars and abandoned him. He looked directly into Lucia's tear-filled eyes, his chest tightening with anger and confusion.
Daniel: She's my wife.
Lucia: Please... just continue to your room, sir.
Lucia grabbed the handle of her cart and tried to push past them down the hall, her head bowed low. But Daniel stepped directly into her path, his hand coming down firmly on the metal frame of the trolley to block her way.
Daniel: You think you can just walk away from me again?
Lucia: Mr. Sterling, I have five more rooms to clean on this floor. I can't lose this job.
Victoria: Your wife? Daniel, you told everyone at the country club that your wife ran off to Europe with a fake trust fund!
Daniel: That's what my mother told me! Lucia, look at me right now!
Lucia: I have nothing to say to you, Daniel. Please let me go.
Daniel: You're pregnant! Is that... is that my child?
Lucia: No. It's mine. Just mine.
Daniel felt a sharp pain in his chest as her words hit him. He reached out and gently grabbed her wrist, stopping her from backing away any further into the service hallway.
Daniel: Six months ago you disappeared from our penthouse overnight. My mother showed me a signed wire transfer and a letter saying you never loved me!
Lucia: Your mother paid off the hospital security, Daniel! She forced me into a car and told me if I ever contacted you again, she would destroy my brother's small business!
Victoria: Wait a minute... Daniel, your mother told the board that Lucia signed a prenup waiver and accepted a cash settlement!
Lucia: I never took a single cent from your family! I've been living in a tiny studio apartment downtown, working twelve-hour shifts at this hotel just to afford my prenatal checkups!
Daniel: My mother lied to me? She told me you aborted our baby!
Lucia: She wanted me gone because I wasn't an heiress like Victoria! She threatened to take my baby away the moment it was born!
Victoria took a step back, looking between Daniel's furious expression and Lucia's trembling frame. The hallway seemed to grow suffocatingly quiet under the heavy chandeliers as the truth began to unravel right before their eyes, setting off a chain of events that would shatter the Sterling empire forever.
