The Maid Behind The Curtains

The Bride Struck My Secret Child Before The Groom Discovered Everything

The bright summer morning sun poured through the massive stained glass windows of the grand estate in suburban Ohio. Lily adjusted the heavy linen apron around her waist, her fingers trembling slightly as she smoothed down the crisp white front. She had worked as a housemaid for the wealthy Vance family for nearly five years, always keeping her head down and her voice quiet. The house was buzzing with frantic energy today because it was the day of the biggest event of the season. David Vance, the handsome sole heir to a vast real estate company and estate fortune, was set to marry Clara Montgomery, the daughter of a prominent city judge.

Lily walked softly across the polished oak hardwood floors, carrying a freshly ironed silk tablecloth toward the main dining hall. Her six-year-old daughter, Daisy, trailed quietly behind her, holding onto the edge of Lily's apron with tiny fingers. Daisy was a sweet, blue-eyed child with subtle freckles across her nose, born during a stormy summer six years ago. Lily had kept Daisy's origin a complete secret from everyone in the grand house, telling the staff only that her father was a ghost from her past. But every time Lily looked at David Vance, her heart beat with a heavy, painful ache that she carried deep inside her chest.

Daisy: Mommy, why is that lady in the long white dress yelling so much today?

Lily: Shh, sweetie. Miss Clara is just nervous because it is her special wedding day.

Daisy: She does not look happy. She looks very angry at the helpers.

Lily: We just need to finish setting up the tables, okay? Then we can rest in the kitchen.

Lily set the heavy table linens down on a silver cart and knelt to wipe a stray smudge off Daisy's cheek. She loved her daughter more than life itself, working double shifts to afford small toys and soft clothes for the little girl. The Vance family paid a steady salary, but the head of the household, David's mother, was a cold woman who demanded perfection from every servant. Lily knew that any small mistake could lead to immediate termination, leaving her with no income to support her young child. As Lily stood up, she heard the loud, sharp clicking of high heels echoing down the hallway.

Clara Montgomery marched into the dining room, her voluminous white lace wedding gown dragging behind her on the clean floor. Her face was tense, her eyebrows pulled down in sharp annoyance as she looked at the flower arrangements on the main table. She spotted Lily standing near the dessert cart and immediately pointed a manicured finger at her face with hot frustration.

Clara: You! Why are these white roses standing in silver vases instead of gold ones?

Lily: I am sorry, Miss Clara. Mrs. Vance ordered the silver ones from the florist yesterday afternoon.

Clara: I do not care what Mrs. Vance ordered! This is my wedding, not hers!

Lily: I can call the coordinator right away and ask if they have gold replacements in the back room.

Clara: Do it now, and take that filthy child out of my sight before she ruins my gown!

Lily bowed her head quickly, pulling Daisy behind her back to protect the small girl from Clara's harsh glare. Daisy squeezed her mother's hand tightly, her small body shaking with fear as Clara snapped her silk fan shut with a loud clacking sound. Clara turned on her heel and strode toward the fitting room, leaving a heavy silence in the grand hall. Lily took a deep, shaky breath, trying to calm the sudden knot of fear in her stomach. She knew Clara was a cruel woman, but she had no idea how far Clara would go to protect her high social standing. Lily led Daisy toward the quiet side corridor, unaware that a long-buried secret was about to surface before the ceremony even started.
