Three days later, the morning sun poured through the high arched windows of Harrison's private study.
Harrison sat behind his massive mahogany desk, dressed in a sharp charcoal three-piece suit.
Sitting across from him was Mr. Reynolds, the Sterling family's chief estate attorney, holding a thick stack of blue-bound legal documents.
On the leather sofa nearby, Clara sat holding little Toby, who was giggling happily as he played with a silver rattle.
Mr. Reynolds: Harrison, the probate court has officially ratified the forfeiture decree against the Vance estate.
Harrison: Did they recover the embezzled trust funds, Reynolds?
Mr. Reynolds: Every single dollar. The ten million Victoria tried to siphon has been returned to Toby's primary trust, along with thirty million dollars in liquidated Vance assets seized under the civil forfeiture order.
Harrison: Good. Put all of the Vance money into a public charity trust for orphaned infants.
Mr. Reynolds: Right away, sir. Now, there is the matter of Sarah's private estate testament.
Harrison leaned forward, his brow furrowing with sudden curiosity.
Harrison: Sarah had a private testament? I thought we executed her entire will six months ago.
Mr. Reynolds: Sarah gave me a sealed codicil forty-eight hours before her fatal car accident. She instructed me to open it only if Victoria Vance ever attempted to claim guardianship of Toby.
Mr. Reynolds broke the red wax seal on a thick parchment envelope, pulling out a handwritten letter and reading it aloud.
"To my beloved husband, Harrison. If you are reading this, my worst fears have come true, and Victoria has made her move against our family. I know I may not have much time left, so I must tell you the truth about Clara."
Clara's head snapped up, her hands freezing on the silver rattle as she looked across the room in shock.
Clara: About me...? Mrs. Sarah wrote about me?!
Mr. Reynolds: Let me continue, please. "Clara is not just our housemaid, Harrison. She is the daughter of Arthur Vance's first wife—the legitimate heiress who was cast out onto the street when Victoria's mother stole Arthur's fortune twenty-five years ago. Clara gave up her rightful claim to live quietly and protect our son from the shadows."
Harrison turned slowly to stare at Clara, his mouth slightly agape in utter disbelief.
Harrison: Clara... you are Arthur Vance's biological daughter?!
Clara looked down at her hands, her cheeks flushing red as tears welled in her eyes.
Clara: My mother was evicted from the Vance estate when I was only three years old, Mr. Sterling. Victoria and her mother took everything we had. When Sarah found out, she hired me so I would always have a safe home and a purpose.
Harrison: Why didn't you tell me this when Victoria moved into the house?
Clara: Because I didn't care about the money, Harrison. I only cared about Sarah, and when Sarah died, I stayed to protect Toby. I knew Victoria was ruthless, but I never imagined she would throw a baby from a balcony![cite: 1]
Mr. Reynolds cleared his throat, adjusting his reading glasses as he pointed to the bottom of the parchment.
Mr. Reynolds: Under Sarah's codicil and the restored genealogical records, Clara Vance is the sole legal heir to the entire forty-million-dollar Vance logistics trust.
Clara: I don't want their blood money, Mr. Reynolds! That family brought nothing but misery and death!
Harrison stood up from his desk, walking around the mahogany table and stopping right in front of Clara.
He knelt down on the Persian rug beside her, looking up into her honest, tear-filled eyes with deep admiration.
Harrison: It isn't their money, Clara. It was your father's money, stolen from your mother. And you earned every single cent of it by putting your life on the line to catch my son[cite: 1].
Clara: Harrison... I am just a maid.
Harrison: You are the bravest, most honorable woman I have ever known. And starting today, you are the co-trustee of the entire Sterling-Vance Global Enterprise.
Toby reached his tiny hands out from Clara's lap, grabbing Harrison's silk tie and pulling it with a bright, happy laugh.
Harrison smiled warmly, wrapping his hand around Toby's fingers while resting his other hand gently over Clara's.
Harrison: Sarah knew what she was doing when she brought you into this house, Clara. She left me the guardian of her son, and she left Toby his true protector.
