The morning sun shone bright and warm through the floor-to-ceiling windows of the penthouse suite at St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital. Lily sat in the center of a large velvet armchair, wearing soft yellow pajamas with a small white bandage covering her forehead.
She was giggling softly as she colored a picture book with bright green and purple crayons. Sitting beside her was Nora, holding a warm cup of tea as she watched her daughter’s smile return.
Lily: Look, Mommy! I drew a dragon with green wings!
Nora: That is the most beautiful dragon I’ve ever seen, sweetie. You’re quite the artist.
A gentle knock sounded at the door, and Detective Vance walked into the room carrying a small white box wrapped in a pink ribbon.
Detective Vance: Good morning, Miss Sterling. How is our brave little patient doing today?
Lily: Look! The doctor gave me a white bandage with little stars on it!
Detective Vance: It looks very heroic, Lily. I brought you something from the department.
Detective Vance set the white box on the small table. Lily opened it eagerly, pulling out a plush brown teddy bear wearing a tiny gold police badge around its neck.
Lily: A police bear! Thank you, officer!
Nora: That’s very kind of you, Detective Vance. Thank you for checking in on us.
Detective Vance: I wanted to let you know personally, Nora. Arthur Montgomery’s indictment was officially signed by the grand jury ten minutes ago.
Nora: No bail?
Detective Vance: No bail. He’s being transferred to the state penitentiary in Richmond to await trial. His defense lawyer is already talking about a guilty plea to avoid a public trial.
Nora: Good. He can spend the next decade reflecting on how he treats children.
Detective Vance: What about his company?
Nora: Vance Global Security completed the acquisition of Montgomery Holdings an hour ago. We’re restructuring the entire real estate portfolio and turning his Virginia estate into a pediatric rehabilitation facility.
Detective Vance: Turning his estate into a children's facility? That’s poetic justice if I’ve ever heard it.
Nora: My father always taught me that money is only useful if you use it to protect those who can't protect themselves.
Detective Vance smiled, tipping his hat to Nora before stepping back toward the door.
Detective Vance: Take care of yourselves, ladies. You won't be hearing from Arthur Montgomery ever again.
As the door closed, Lily set her crayons down and climbed onto Nora’s lap, wrapping her small arms tightly around her mother’s neck.
Lily: Mommy?
Nora: Yes, my love?
Lily: When you kicked that mean man... you looked like a superhero from my comic books.
Nora laughed softly, kissing her daughter’s cheek as she held her close against her chest.
Nora: I’m not a superhero, sweetie. I’m just your mom. And as long as I’m breathing, nobody in this world will ever hurt you and get away with it.
Lily: I love you, Mommy.
Nora: I love you more than all the stars in the sky, baby girl.
Outside the window, the sun rose higher over the city skyline, casting a warm, golden glow across the room where mother and daughter sat together, safe, victorious, and whole.
