On a bright Tuesday morning, the tension inside Oakridge Manor reached a dangerous breaking point during a formal breakfast gathering. Victoria had invited several prominent local women from her social club for tea in the formal sitting room near the hall. She wanted to show off the expensive renovations she had ordered for the East Wing of the magnificent mansion. The room was decorated with gold trim, plush velvet armchairs, and a framed USA flag painting hanging above the mantle.
Sophia was tasked with serving fresh porcelain tea cups filled with hot herbal brew to the demanding high-society guests. Her hands were exhausted from spending four hours scrubbing the kitchen floors earlier that morning, but she remained completely focused. As she approached Victoria's side with the heavy silver tray, Victoria's nine-month-old son wobbled unstable near the edge of a sofa. The infant reached out wildly for the hot teapot sitting precariously on the tray as Sophia leaned down toward the table.
Seeing the baby about to pull the boiling water onto his small lap, Sophia instinctively moved her arms forward fast. She pushed the silver tray away from the child, causing a single fine china cup to shatter on the floor. Hot tea splashed onto the rug while Sophia safely pulled the baby back into the soft cushions of the couch. The child was completely unhurt, but the loud sound of breaking porcelain startled the guests, causing them to gasp in surprise.
Victoria: What on earth do you think you are doing, you clumsy fool!
Sophia: I am so sorry, ma'am, but the baby was reaching directly for the hot tea kettle!
Victoria: How dare you make excuses for your utter incompetence in front of my honored guests!
Victoria stood up quickly, her face red with extreme anger as she picked up her crying child from the couch. She stepped directly into Sophia's space, pointing a long manicured finger directly at the terrified maid's pale, freckled face.
Victoria: You spilled tea on a rug that costs more than your entire family makes in five years!
Sophia: Please forgive me, I only wanted to protect your little boy from getting burned!
Victoria: Do not ever touch my son with those dirty hands again, do you hear me?
Sophia: I was only trying to help him before he fell off the edge!
Victoria: Servants must remember their lowly place and never touch what belongs to this family!
The guests watched in awkward silence as Victoria continued shouting insults at the young maid, completely ignoring the baby's safety. Sophia stood trembling in her clean white apron, tears swelling in her brown eyes under the bright daylight filling the room. She kept her chin up as best as she could, but the harsh words cut deep into her fragile spirit. She had spent her whole life feeling unwanted, and Victoria's cruel words brought all those old painful memories back.
Sophia dropped to her knees to begin cleaning up the broken china pieces with her bare hands, ignoring the pain. Victoria watched her with cold eyes, showing absolutely no sympathy or gratitude for preventing a terrible accident with her child. She cleared her throat and ordered the other staff members to take the guests into the sunny garden courtyard immediately. The sitting room cleared out, leaving only Victoria, her crying child, and Sophia kneeling alone on the hardwood floor.
