The Arizona National Shooting Center echoed with the sound of gunfire as competitors prepared for one of the country's most prestigious marksmanship championships. Elite shooters from across America cleaned their rifles, adjusted their sights, and discussed strategies while spectators gathered behind safety barriers.
Golden bullet casings covered the concrete firing lanes after a full morning of practice.
Long before the competition officially began, one woman quietly swept the empty shells into neat piles.
Her name was Claire Morgan.
Dressed in a simple gray polo shirt, work pants, and sturdy black tactical boots, Claire moved calmly from lane to lane with nothing more than a push broom in her hands.
Most competitors barely noticed her.
To them, she was simply another range employee.
As Claire continued sweeping, a woman wearing a bright red racing-style shooting suit approached with a confident smile.
Her name was Jessica Hayes, the defending state champion.
Several photographers followed behind her while other competitors greeted her with admiration.
Jessica watched Claire for a moment before laughing.
"Careful how you sweep," she joked with a playful grin. "This is a competition."
A few nearby shooters chuckled.
Claire looked up briefly.
She smiled politely.
Then returned to her work without saying a word.
Jessica interpreted the silence as nervousness.
She leaned against one of the shooting benches while chatting with friends, occasionally glancing toward Claire with amused confidence.
None of them noticed the way Claire quietly observed every target downrange.
Nor did they notice how naturally her eyes judged distance, wind direction, and shooting angles.
She wasn't simply cleaning.
She was studying the range.
A few minutes later, Jessica walked toward the firing table and noticed Claire placing the broom against the wall.
An idea suddenly crossed her mind.
With an amused smile, she slid one of the practice rifles across the shooting bench.
"If you can hit the center," Jessica laughed, "I'll give you fifty bucks."
The surrounding shooters burst into laughter.
They expected the cleaner to refuse.
Instead...
Claire calmly picked up the rifle.
The laughter slowly faded.
