A Challenge Nobody Expected

Ryan watched confidently as Ava approached the line of competition rifles. He folded his arms, convinced she would miss the target and prove his point. Around him, spectators whispered excitedly, believing they were about to witness an amusing contest between a famous athlete and an ordinary employee.

Ava ignored every voice around her. She slowly picked up a green precision rifle and inspected it with remarkable care. Her fingers moved naturally across the weapon as if every motion had been repeated thousands of times before. She adjusted the scope, checked the bolt, measured the wind by watching the nearby American flag flutter gently, and settled into position.

The experienced competitors immediately noticed something unusual.

"Look at her posture," one veteran whispered.

"She's done this before."

Another former Marine narrowed his eyes.

"Not just before," he said quietly. "She's professionally trained."

Ryan laughed when he heard them.

"It's one shot," he replied. "Anybody can look confident."

Ava took one slow breath.

Another.

The noisy shooting range gradually became silent as people instinctively stopped talking. Even photographers lowered their cameras.

She squeezed the trigger.

BANG!

The rifle echoed across the desert.

Nearly three hundred yards away, the paper silhouette target jerked violently.

A range official quickly raised his binoculars.

His eyes widened.

"Dead center."

"Upper chest."

"Perfect shot."

A wave of disbelief spread through the spectators.

Professional shooters rushed to confirm the result through spotting scopes. Every one of them saw the same thing.

The bullet had landed almost exactly where a championship sniper would place it.

Ryan's smile disappeared.

For the first time that day, he had no clever response.

He slowly stepped closer, staring at Ava with genuine confusion.

"Wait..." he asked quietly.

"Who are you?"

Ava lowered the rifle without celebrating.

Instead, she slowly rolled up the sleeve of her stained black shirt.

On the inside of her forearm rested an intricate geometric mandala tattoo.

An elderly range officer froze the instant he saw it.

His face lost all color.

"That can't be..." he whispered.

"I thought every member of that unit disappeared years ago."

The crowd looked from the tattoo back to Ava, realizing the impossible shot was only the beginning of an even bigger secret.
