The Truth Hidden Beneath Her Dress

Daniel knelt beside the open car door.

The carnival lights twinkled behind them as people continued laughing only a few yards away, completely unaware of the fear unfolding in the parking lot.

Lily slowly stepped out of the car.

She kept her back turned toward her father.

Her small hands trembled as she carefully pulled one side of her dress away from her shoulder.

"Dad..."

She took a shaky breath.

"I need to show you something."

"Please don't get mad."

Then she turned around.

Daniel froze.

Running across her shoulder was a large infected laceration.

The skin surrounding the wound was swollen and badly inflamed.

His face instantly turned pale.

"Lily..."

He dropped to his knees.

"How did this happen?"

Fresh tears rolled down her face.

She hugged the stuffed bear she had won earlier that afternoon.

"I didn't want to ruin our day."

Daniel gently examined the injury without touching it.

Someone had wrapped it poorly with a dirty piece of cloth.

The makeshift bandage had hidden the wound for hours.

His voice shook.

"Who did this?"

Lily looked back toward the glowing carnival.

She pointed silently toward one of the ride areas.

"There was broken metal behind the ride."

"I fell..."

"I told one of the workers."

"They said I'd be okay and told me not to cry."

Daniel's expression changed instantly.

This wasn't just a scraped shoulder.

The wound was serious enough to require immediate medical attention.

Without another word, he lifted Lily into his arms and carried her back to the car.

As he drove toward the nearest hospital, he kept replaying her heartbreaking words in his mind.

She hadn't hidden the injury because she was afraid of pain.

She hid it because she was afraid of disappointing her father.

And that realization hurt Daniel far more deeply than any wound ever could.
