The Woman Everyone Believed Was Dead

The afternoon streets of New York City bustled with people rushing between offices, cafés, and subway entrances. Taxi horns echoed through the traffic while tourists stopped to admire towering skyscrapers. Among the crowd walked Daniel Carter, holding the hand of his six-year-old son, Ethan.

It was supposed to be an ordinary Saturday.

Daniel had promised Ethan a trip to the science museum before stopping for ice cream afterward. Since losing his wife three years earlier, he tried to make every weekend special for his son.

Mary Carter had officially been declared dead after disappearing during a charity trip overseas. Despite years of investigations, no body had ever been found. Eventually, everyone accepted that she would never return.

Everyone except Ethan.

He still talked about his mother every night before bed.

As they waited to cross a busy intersection, Ethan suddenly tightened his father's hand.

His breathing became quick.

He pointed toward the opposite sidewalk.

"Dad..."

Daniel barely looked up.

Then Ethan shouted.

"Dad, look! It's Mom!"

Daniel turned automatically.

Across the street sat a homeless woman wrapped in an old blanket.

Her clothes were filthy.

Her hair was tangled.

Dirt covered most of her face.

At first, Daniel assumed his son had mistaken a stranger for his mother.

Then...

The woman slowly raised her head.

Their eyes met.

Daniel's heart stopped.

The same bright green eyes.

The same tiny scar near her eyebrow.

His lips trembled.

"Mary?"

The woman gasped.

For a moment, neither of them moved.

Traffic continued passing between them, but it felt as though the rest of the city had disappeared.

Only one thing mattered now.

She was alive.
