The Noise Behind The Portrait

Stepmother Trapped Her Stepson Inside The Wall For His Inheritance

Elena wiped down the polished marble banister of the grand estate with a soft microfiber cloth, her joints aching from hours of labor. The mansion belonged to Arthur Vance, a wealthy real estate developer whose family had lived in the seaside town for generations. Arthur had recently married Isabella, a striking blonde woman twenty years his junior, who wore designer dresses and treated the domestic staff like invisible shadows. Elena had worked for the Vance family for over six years, back when Arthur’s late wife was still alive, and she knew every nook, cranny, and crevice of the massive three-story house.

It was late afternoon on a rainy Tuesday, and the mansion was unusually quiet. Arthur was away in the city attending a high-stakes board meeting regarding a new commercial property development, leaving Isabella alone in the house with the household staff. Elena carried her silver bucket and metal cleaning supplies down the long gallery hallway on the second floor, stopping to polish the heavy gilded frame of a massive Mona Lisa painting replica that hung near the end of the corridor. The painting had been placed there three weeks ago, right around the time seven-year-old Leo Vance had mysteriously gone missing from his bedroom.

The local police had searched the surrounding woods, dragged the estate pond, and interviewed every employee twice, but no trace of the little boy had ever been found. Isabella had cried bitterly for the television cameras, convincing the community that an intruder had taken the child in the middle of the night. But as Elena brushed dust away from the bottom edge of the massive picture frame, her ears caught a strange sound. It was not the creaking of the old wooden floorboards or the whistling of the wind outside. It was a rhythmic, scratching noise followed by a soft sound.

Elena pressed her ear against the cool wall surface just behind the lower right corner of the heavy wooden frame. The sound grew clearer, accompanied by a small whimpering breath that made her heart freeze inside her chest. She carefully pushed the heavy frame aside, letting it swing outward on its mounting hooks, revealing a hidden metal floor vent mounted flush against the wallboard. The iron latch on the vent cover was locked tightly with a small silver bolt, secured firmly from the outside.

Muffled Voice: Please help me. It is so dark in here.

Elena dropped her cleaning rag to the floor, her hands shaking violently as she recognized the weak voice belonging to Arthur’s missing child. She pulled a small flathead screwdriver out of her utility apron pocket, jammed the steel tip into the lock mechanism, and twisted with all her strength until the metal latch popped open with a loud click. She pulled the heavy iron grate back, peering into the narrow air duct behind the wall.

Elena: Leo? Is that really you in there? Keep talking, sweetie, I am getting you out!

Leo: Elena? I am so hungry. Please get me out of here!

Elena reached her arms deep into the dark opening, catching the little boy under his arms as he crawled forward toward the light. Leo was wearing faded blue patterned pajamas, his face covered in gray dust and his small frame trembling with absolute terror. Elena pulled him out onto the clean hallway runner, wrapping her arms around his small shoulders as he began to cry hysterically into her stained apron.

Leo: Is it my dad? Did they tell him I was gone so he would never find me?

Elena: Shh, you are safe now. Your dad is coming home today. I have got you, Leo.

Before Elena could stand up or comfort the child any further, the heavy double doors at the far end of the hallway clicked open. The sharp sound of expensive high heels clicked loudly against the hardwood floor as Isabella walked into the gallery corridor, wearing a glittering gold evening gown for an upcoming dinner party. Her hand was clutching a polished golden key, her blue eyes widening in sudden shock as she saw Elena kneeling next to the filthy boy beside the open ventilation duct.
