Once the sound of Sarah's car speeding down the long driveway faded into complete silence, the master bathroom became calm and quiet once again. Sunlight poured brightly through the frosted glass windows, illuminating the mist that was slowly clearing from the air. David immediately turned his full attention back to the two people who truly mattered.
He helped Martha stand up from the floor, offering the loyal servant his hand with deep respect and gratitude. Martha brushed down her wet uniform, wiping away her tears with a corner of the dry towel.
Father David: Martha, I cannot thank you enough. You protected my child when I wasn't here to do it myself.
Maid Martha: I would give my life for little Lily, Master David. I am just glad you came home when you did.
Father David: Your loyalty will never be forgotten. You are taking a permanent salary increase today, and you will never have to answer to anyone in this house ever again except me.
Maid Martha: Thank you, sir. Let us get this sweet girl into some warm clothes before she catches a cold.
David gently lifted Lily out of the wet mechanical wheelchair, cradling her small body in his arms. She was still shivering slightly, her tiny arms wrapped tightly around her father's neck as if she was afraid he might vanish again. David carried her into her bright bedroom down the hall, sitting down on the soft plush bed beside her.
Martha brought in soft fleece pajamas and a thick woolen blanket, carefully dressing the child while David held her hands to warm them up. The young girl's breathing gradually slowed down, her pale face regaining its normal healthy glow under the warmth of her father's presence.
Lily: Is Sarah ever coming back, daddy?
Father David: Never, Lily. I promise you on my life, she will never step foot in this house again. Nobody will ever hurt you here as long as I live.
Lily: She took mommy's picture and put it high up where I couldn't reach it.
David stood up instantly, walking out into the hallway and returning moments later with the framed photograph of his late wife. He polished the glass on his sleeve before gently placing it directly into Lily's waiting hands. Lily pressed the photo against her chest, letting out a long, peaceful sigh of relief.
Lily: Thank you, daddy. I love you so much.
Father David: I love you more than life itself, my sweet girl. I am so sorry I let that evil woman into our home. I was blind, but my eyes are completely open now.
David sat on the edge of the bed, pulling his daughter close to his chest while Martha brought in a cup of hot cocoa with marshmallows. The heavy cloud of grief and fear that had hung over the Miller household finally began to lift, replaced by a renewed sense of safety and love.
