The Secret In The Attic

Stepmother Sold Her Insurance Policy Until Officer Showed Up

The quiet hum of the heart monitor felt unusually loud as the two women stared each other down in the small hospital room. Victoria adjusted her golden bracelet, her rings catching the harsh white light from above. She looked completely out of place in a public hospital, but her eyes held a calculating, dangerous sharp glare.

Captain Sarah Vance: You think my rank frightens me from protecting my sister?

Victoria: I think you are a soldier who knows nothing about business, law, or probate courts.

Maya: Sarah, what is she talking about? What estate?

Captain Sarah Vance: Dad didn't leave everything to Victoria, Maya. He left a life insurance policy specifically designated for your medical care and education.

Victoria: That policy was revoked six months ago!

Captain Sarah Vance: You can't revoke a primary beneficiary trust without a judge's signature, Victoria. I know how Dad set it up.

Victoria: Your father was ill, Sarah. He made adjustments to his will during his final weeks at the estate mansion.

Captain Sarah Vance: He was medicated and isolated by you! You kept everyone away from him, including his own daughters.

Maya shifted on her thin pillow, her face twisting in sudden emotional pain. She remembered those awful weeks before her father passed away in the big, silent house on the hill.

Maya: I remember... Dad told me I would never have to worry about college or medical bills. He promised me.

Victoria: Promises aren't legal contracts, Maya. The court recognized my full guardianship over the entire inheritance.

Captain Sarah Vance: Then why did I find a modified copy of Dad's trust fund paperwork in his study back at the house?

Victoria's thin lips pressed into a tight line. Her fingers clenched tightly around the strap of her high-end leather bag as she glanced nervously toward the heavy door.

Victoria: You went into my house?

Captain Sarah Vance: It was my home first. I went straight there before coming to the hospital to grab Maya's medical records.

Victoria: That is illegal entry! I will call the police and have you arrested for trespassing!

Captain Sarah Vance: Call them. Please, Victoria, dial the phone right now. I'd love for the police to look at the safe in the attic.

Victoria: You didn't open the safe. You don't have the combination.

Captain Sarah Vance: Dad's military service number was the combination. He taught it to me when I was twelve years old.

Maya pulled her blanket tighter around her chest, staring wide-eyed at her older sister in shock and hope.

Maya: Sarah... what did you find in Dad's safe?

Captain Sarah Vance: I found the original payout receipts from the life insurance company. Three million dollars, Maya.

Victoria: That money was used to pay off the mortgage on the estate!

Captain Sarah Vance: The mortgage was already cleared two years before Dad died. I have the bank statements right here in my coat.

Maya: You took my life insurance money, Mom? How could you?

Victoria: Don't you dare call me greedy! I maintained that massive property while your sister was playing soldier overseas!

Captain Sarah Vance: You didn't maintain anything! You let the roof rot, you stopped paying Maya's health insurance, and you leased out the estate land to private developers!

Victoria: It was a necessary business investment to save the family capital!

Captain Sarah Vance: No, it was embezzlement. And I know exactly where that money went.

Sarah pulled a thin folder from inside her jacket, tossing it lightly onto the small table next to the medical monitor. Victoria stared at the papers like they were poisonous snakes ready to strike. The truth was finally starting to come out, and the walls were closing in on Victoria's long web of deception.
