Justice for the Innocent

Stepmother Rips Crown Off Girl Until Truth Is Revealed

Two tall, uniformed police officers stepped through the heavy glass double doors of the mansion, followed closely by a sharp-looking divorce lawyer holding a dark leather briefcase. The party guests immediately stepped aside to create a clean lane for the officers to walk through. Victoria's eyes widened in sheer panic as she recognized the lead detective walking toward her with a set of steel handcuffs hanging from his duty belt. She tried to scramble up against the marble pillar, her expensive purple dress gathering dirt and crushed pink rose petals from the floor, but her legs were shaking too hard to stand up properly.

Officer Miller: Victoria Vance? You are under arrest for grand larceny and fraud.

Victoria: This is a mistake! My stepdaughter is trying to frame me!

Lawyer Hayes: We have the bank records and forged signatures, Victoria.

Victoria: You can't do this to me! Do you know who I am?!

The officer knelt down and pulled Victoria's hands behind her back, snapping the cold steel handcuffs around her wrists with two sharp clicks. The crowd erupted into loud chatter, some people even clapping softly as the wicked woman was finally brought down. Clara walked over to Lily, who was no longer crying, and pulled her close into a tight, warm hug. She lifted her daughter up onto her hip, shielding the young girl's eyes from the pathetic sight of her stepgrandmother being led away in chains. Lily wrapped her small arms tightly around Clara's neck, resting her head on her mother's shoulder with complete trust.

Lily: Is she gone, Mommy? Is the mean lady leaving?

Clara: Yes, baby. She can never hurt us or take our home again.

Lily: My flower crown is broken.

Clara: We will make a much bigger, prettier one tomorrow, my love.

Victoria screamed out curses and wild threats as the police officers slowly marched her down the long front driveway toward the waiting patrol car. Her voice echoed pathetically against the concrete walls until the heavy double doors clicked shut, locking the noise outside for good. The grand hall fell into a peaceful, calm quietness. The estate's chief financial officer stepped up to Clara, offering his hand with a deep look of respect and apology. He acknowledged that the board had been completely fooled by Victoria's lies, but promised that Clara and Lily would immediately receive everything that was stolen from them.

Clara nodded politely to the man, holding her head high with true grace. She didn't care about the board's late apologies or the grand mansion itself. All she cared about was that her daughter was safe and that her father's memory was finally cleared of the dark cloud Victoria had cast over it. She looked down at the crushed rose petals on the floor, knowing that out of the ruins of that violent moment, a brand-new, bright life was beginning for both of them. They had finally won the long war, and nobody would ever push them around again.
