Snow gently covered the gardens of the prestigious Ashford Mansion as guests arrived for the annual Christmas dinner. Inside, the grand dining hall glowed beneath sparkling crystal chandeliers, while a magnificent Christmas tree stood beside the fireplace, decorated with thousands of golden ornaments.
The Ashford family gathered around an enormous dining table covered with elegant white linen, silver candle holders, and expensive crystal glasses. Laughter and cheerful conversations filled the room as servants served the holiday feast.
Among the guests sat six-year-old Sophie Bennett.
Wearing a beautiful white dress with a red ribbon in her hair, Sophie smiled excitedly as she reached for a glass of sparkling grape juice.
But her tiny hand accidentally bumped a nearby wine glass.
The crystal tipped over.
Deep red wine spread across the spotless white tablecloth like a crimson stain.
The room instantly became silent.
Every guest turned to look.
Sophie's smile disappeared.
"I'm... I'm sorry..."
Before anyone could comfort her, Eleanor Bennett, the family's strict matriarch, rose from her chair.
Her elegant red velvet dress swayed as she marched toward the frightened child.
"You careless girl!"
Without hesitation, she slapped Sophie across the face.
The sound echoed through the silent dining hall.
Tears immediately filled the little girl's eyes.
She gently placed her hand against her burning cheek.
"I'm sorry, Grandma," she whispered between sobs.
No one moved.
Several relatives lowered their eyes.
Others pretended not to notice.
Only one person stood up.
Daniel Bennett.
Sophie's father.
His jaw tightened as he stared at his mother.
Then he looked down at his trembling daughter.
With tears streaming down her face, Sophie quietly asked the question that shattered his heart.
"Daddy..."
"Am I bad?"
Daniel knelt beside her and gently wiped away her tears.
"No, sweetheart."
His voice was calm.
"You made a mistake."
"That doesn't make you a bad person."
He carefully lifted Sophie into his arms.
The little girl wrapped her arms tightly around his neck, still crying softly.
Without saying another word, Daniel turned toward the front entrance.
Behind him, confused whispers spread across the room.
One of his sisters hurried after him.
"Daniel, don't make a scene."
But Daniel didn't stop walking.
He opened the mansion doors.
Cold winter air rushed inside.
Snowflakes drifted across the entrance as he stepped outside carrying his daughter safely in his arms.
Before leaving, he turned back toward the silent family.
His voice echoed through the mansion.
"Nobody..."
"...touches my daughter."
The heavy doors closed behind him.
The dining hall remained completely silent.
But no one realized...
That this Christmas would expose secrets the Bennett family had hidden for years.
