The vast sunlit mansion in Dallas, Texas, stood quiet under the morning heat, its white walls and dark hardwood floors glowing under the bright natural light. Victoria adjusted her beige dress over her pregnant stomach as she slowly walked down the second-floor hallway, her heart pounding in her chest. She could hear the quiet footsteps of her sister-in-law, Samantha, following closely behind her near the grand staircase railing.
Samantha: You think you can just walk in here and take everything our father built, don't you?
Victoria: I am his legal wife, Samantha, and this baby is his true heir whether you like it or not.
Samantha: He was sick and confused when he changed his will, and I won't let a nobody take this estate!
Victoria stopped near the top of the stairs, turning slowly to face the angry blonde woman who had made her life miserable for months. She held her breath as Samantha stepped closer, her eyes fixed on the thick envelope Victoria held against her side. The house was dead silent except for the faint hum of the air conditioner blowing cold air through the empty grand rooms.
Victoria: The divorce lawyer confirmed everything yesterday, Samantha, and the full estate belongs to this child.
Samantha: You tricked him into signing those papers before he passed away!
Victoria: He wanted us protected from your endless debts and bad choices!
Before Victoria could take another step backward toward the handrail, Samantha lunged forward with her hands outstretched, her face twisted in rage under the bright hall lights. Victoria lost her footing on the polished wooden edge, slipping violently backward as her hands clawed at the empty air. A sharp sound echoed through the mansion as Victoria tumbled down the steep wooden steps, hitting the landing hard before rolling all the way to the bottom foyer floor.
Victoria: No! Stop!
She hit the dark hardwood floor at the base of the stairs with a heavy impact that knocked the wind completely out of her lungs. Pain shot through her side as she lay motionless on her left hip, her long hair scattered across the polished floorboards under the bright Texas sun streaming through the grand front entrance glass. High above her on the landing, framed by a massive piece of American flag artwork hanging on the crisp white wall, Samantha stood totally frozen, staring down without moving a single muscle to help.
Samantha: Look what you made yourself do, Victoria.
Victoria gasped for air, clutching her swollen stomach with one shaking hand while her other hand reached blindly into her beige dress pocket. Her fingers wrapped around her smartphone, pulling it out onto the floor right in front of her face. Tears burned her eyes as she tapped the screen with trembling fingers, her voice barely a whisper against the cold wooden floor.
Victoria: I swear I didn't want this! She rushed toward me!
Detective Reeves: Victoria, stay calm. Is the audio recording running on your phone right now?
Victoria: Detective Reeves, the evidence is ready!
Detective Reeves: We're coming. Hold tight, we are right outside the front gate.
Samantha gasped from the upper landing, her hands flying up to her head in sudden, sheer panic as she realized what was happening. She looked down at the injured pregnant woman lying at the bottom of the stairs, her dark dress rustling as she took a slow step backward toward the master bedroom doorway. The sunlit foyer seemed to grow colder as the distant sound of heavy vehicle tires crunched over the gravel driveway outside the front entrance.
