Her father froze with his coffee cup halfway to his mouth.
Father: What are you doing in my house, Elena?
Elena: I came to take back what belongs to me.
Stepmother: You have no right to barge in here like a criminal!
Elena: You are the real criminal in this room, Victoria.
Stepmother: Get out before I call the police to arrest you!
Elena: Call them. I would love to tell them everything you did.
Her stepbrother leaned back in his chair and sneered at Elena.
Stepbrother: You always love creating cheap drama for attention.
Elena ignored his harsh words and kept her eyes on her father.
Elena: Where is my daughter, Dad?
Father: I don’t know what nonsense you are talking about.
Elena: Maya is four years old now. I know she is here.
Stepmother: She is living with a legal guardian across the state!
Elena: You lied to me for four whole years!
Elena looked down toward the floor in total despair.
She noticed a faint shadow moving near the long white tablecloth.
The table was draped low toward the polished wooden floorboards.
A tiny yellow plastic cup sat right beside a chair leg.
Elena heard a very soft sipping sound coming from underneath the table.
Her heart missed a beat as she stared at the small cup.
She dropped her leather bag onto the dining room floor.
She slowly lowered herself down onto her knees near the table edge.
Her stepmother stood up so fast her chair screeched backward.
Stepmother: Don't you dare touch anything in this room!
Elena ignored her screams and lifted the edge of the cloth.
A little girl with golden curls was sitting silently on the rug.
She was holding the yellow cup with both of her small hands.
She looked up at Elena with big, confused blue eyes.
The child was wearing faded hand-me-down clothes that were too big.
