The Broken Trust

She Found a Hidden Chain Around Her Son's Neck

The afternoon sun beat down hard on the large glass windows of the kitchen.

Mark took the smartphone from Sarah's trembling hands and replayed the exact video clip again.

He watched his mother place the cold iron links tight around his infant son's neck.

He heard his mother's harsh voice warning the small baby to remain completely quiet.

Mark: Mom... how could you say those terrible things to my six-month-old child?

Evelyn: I was only trying to break his spoiled habits before he grew any older!

Mark: He is an innocent baby, Mom! He does not have spoiled habits to break!

Sarah: She has been doing this every time I left Tommy alone with her, Mark.

Evelyn pulled herself up tall, her eyes flashing with sudden cold anger and arrogance.

Evelyn: I paid for this house, Mark! My trust fund bought every single brick here!

Evelyn: If you take her side over mine, I will cut your inheritance off completely!

Mark looked at his mother as if seeing her real face for the first time ever.

The heavy threat of losing his massive family fortune hung in the silent kitchen air.

Sarah watched her husband closely, wondering if money would make him stay completely silent.

Sarah: Is her money worth more to you than your baby's physical safety, Mark?

Mark looked down at little Tommy, who reached out his small hand toward his father.

The baby whimpered softly, still holding onto Sarah's silk shirt with tiny fingers.

Mark: No money in the entire world is worth letting anyone harm my child.

Mark turned back to face his mother with a strong, determined look on his face.

Mark: You need to pack your personal bags and leave my house right now, Mom.

Evelyn: You cannot throw me out of my own property over a silly misunderstanding!

Mark: This is my family's home now, and you are no longer welcome inside it.

Evelyn gasped in shock as her son reached down and picked up her leather handbag.

He handed the bag to her and pointed toward the front entrance doors of the mansion.

Evelyn: If I walk out that front door today, you will never see a dime from my estate!

Mark: Keep your money, Mom. My family does not need your toxic wealth anymore.

Sarah felt a sudden surge of deep relief wash over her tired, anxious heart.

She stood next to her husband as Evelyn stomped down the hall toward the exit.

The front door slammed shut with a heavy bang that echoed through the empty hallway.

Sarah: Thank you for standing up for us, Mark. I was so scared you wouldn't.

Mark: I am so sorry I didn't believe you from the start, my love.

Mark: We are going to call our family divorce lawyer and legal advisors right away.
