The Secret In The Drawer

She Dropped The Child In The Pool For Answers

The quiet kitchen smelled faintly of fresh coffee and the damp pool water dripping off Mark's clothes.

Mark set little Leo down on a soft kitchen chair and handed him a small juice box right away.

He turned around to face Sarah with a cold expression that she had never seen on him before.

Mark: You overreacted over a stupid piece of paper you don't even understand!

Sarah: It was a trust fund agreement signed by a divorce lawyer three years ago!

Sarah pulled the crumpled white document out from her pocket and slammed it on the kitchen counter.

Sarah: It lists a monthly payout from an estate named after the Miller family! Who are they?!

Mark reached out quickly to grab the paper but Sarah snatched it back away from his fingers instantly.

Mark: That estate pays for his medical care and his future college fund!

Sarah: You told me his biological parents died in a car accident with zero family left behind!

Sarah: Why were you using waterproof foundation to hide that distinct birthmark on his cheek every single day?!

Mark lowered his voice into a dangerous whisper while stepping closer to the cold marble counter.

Mark: Because his real father is a very powerful man who would take him away from us!

Sarah took a step backward as a wave of deep shock washed over her entire body in silence.

Sarah: You stole him?

Mark: No, I saved him from a terrible household full of money and cruelty!

Leo dropped his juice box onto the clean tile floor with a soft plastic thud between them.

The small boy looked up at both of them with big confused eyes while pulling on his towel.

Leo: Mommy, why are you shouting at Daddy?

Sarah felt her eyes fill with heavy tears as she knelt down beside the small wooden kitchen chair.

She wiped a stray drop of water off the boy's freckled cheek with her warm trembling thumb.

Sarah: Everything is okay, sweetheart, Mommy is just talking with Daddy right now.

Mark: Go upstairs to your playroom right now, Leo, and stay there until I come up.

The little boy grabbed his favorite toy truck and ran quickly up the carpeted stairs without a word.

Sarah stood up slowly while locking her eyes onto her husband's tense face across the room.

Sarah: You are going to tell me the full truth right now or I call the police attorney.

Mark: If you call anyone, Sarah, we both lose everything we built over these past five years!

Sarah: I don't care about this big house or your status if it's all built on a crime!

Mark grabbed his phone off the table and dialed a number with quick aggressive taps of his thumb.

Mark: I'm calling our family lawyer before you do something stupid that ruins our whole life!
