The Boys Who Arrived With Half a Heart

Rain fell softly over St. Michael's Church as mourners gathered to say goodbye to Daniel Harper, a respected firefighter who had lost his life while rescuing a family from a burning apartment building. White lilies surrounded the polished oak casket, and the stained-glass windows filled the sanctuary with muted colors. Friends, coworkers, and neighbors filled every pew, remembering Daniel as a brave man, a loyal friend, and a devoted father.

Near the front of the church stood Emily Harper, Daniel's widow.

She clutched a silver heart-shaped locket hanging around her neck—the last gift Daniel had given her on their tenth wedding anniversary. He had always told her that one day the locket would explain everything, but she had laughed, believing it was only another one of his mysterious jokes.

As the funeral service ended and mourners slowly filed past the casket, the church doors opened once more.

Two boys, no older than twelve, stepped inside.

Both wore oversized black hoodies and worn sneakers. Faint bruises marked their faces, and they looked exhausted, as though they hadn't slept in days.

The congregation turned to stare.

The boys walked quietly toward Daniel's casket.

One of them swallowed hard before looking at Emily.

"He told me... if anything ever happened to him, you would keep your promise."

Emily blinked in confusion.

"Take care of you? Who are you?"

The older boy lowered his eyes.

"He came to see us every birthday."

"He always brought a cake."

"He said he couldn't stay... but he never forgot us."

Emily felt her heartbeat quicken.

Daniel had often disappeared for a few hours every year, claiming he was helping an old friend.

She had never questioned him.

Now those unexplained absences suddenly carried a terrifying meaning.

The younger boy reached into his pocket.

"I think he knew this day would come."
