A Sandwich Served with Kindness

George selected the freshest baguette in the shop.

He sliced it open and filled it generously with roasted turkey, cheddar cheese, crisp lettuce, tomatoes, and homemade mayonnaise.

Then he added a fresh apple, a chocolate chip cookie, and a small bottle of milk.

The little girl watched with wide eyes.

When he finished wrapping everything neatly in brown paper, he gently slid the package across the counter.

"There you go."

She stared at the oversized sandwich.

"Sir..."

"I only asked for one sandwich."

George chuckled.

"You did."

She held up her coins again.

"I don't have enough."

George gently closed her tiny fingers around the money.

"Keep it."

"You might need it tomorrow."

The girl's eyes immediately filled with tears.

No one had ever shown her such unexpected kindness.

She carefully hugged the wrapped sandwich against her chest.

It felt warm.

Safe.

Like hope.

She smiled through her tears.

"Someday..."

"I'll repay your kindness, sir."

George laughed softly.

"You don't owe me anything."

The little girl shook her head.

"My mommy says good hearts should never be forgotten."

George leaned over the counter and gently kissed her forehead.

"I hope life is kind to you."

She smiled one last time before running out the door with her precious bundle held tightly in her arms.

George watched until she disappeared down the sidewalk.

He never even learned her name.

But he would never forget her smile.
