The Hamburger That Brought a Son Home

On a chilly afternoon in Seattle, Washington, people hurried through the busy downtown streets, barely noticing the homeless children sheltering in narrow alleyways between old brick buildings. Most passed without making eye contact, eager to get home before the rain returned.

Eight-year-old Lily Harper had just left a nearby diner with her mother, Sarah. In her hands was a warm cheeseburger she had begged her mom to buy.

As they walked past a graffiti-covered alley, Lily suddenly stopped.

A thin boy, no older than twelve, sat against the cold brick wall.

His clothes were torn.

His face was covered in dirt.

He looked exhausted.

Without saying a word, Lily walked over and placed the burger into his hands.

"Here..."

"Take it."

The boy stared at the food in disbelief.

"No one's ever given me something this nice."

"Thank you."

Lily smiled and gave him a quick hug.

At that exact moment, Sarah turned around.

Her heart nearly stopped.

She ran toward her daughter.

"No!"

"Get away from him!"

She pulled Lily back protectively.

The boy lowered his head in embarrassment.

"I'm sorry..."

"I didn't mean any trouble."
