The bright dining room inside the big Dallas home usually felt quiet and warm during family dinners. Sunlight poured through the tall glass windows, lighting up the cream walls and the neat silver settings on the long table. Claire sat near the edge, her hands resting nervously in her lap as her mother-in-law, Evelyn, served the soup. Evelyn wore her favorite plum dress with a golden sash, sitting tall at the head of the dark wood table like a queen supervising her court. Mark sat right across from Claire, silently checking his phone under the polished wooden edge while his mother spoke continuously about her social club and family traditions. Claire tried her best to smile and keep the peace, even though her heart felt heavy every time Evelyn made a passive-comment about her parenting. Her tiny baby daughter, Lily, sat in a wooden high chair right beside Evelyn, babbling happily and reaching for the shiny silver spoons spread across the pristine white tablecloth.
Everything seemed completely calm for a few short minutes until little Lily's tiny hand swung outwards, accidentally knocking a warm porcelain bowl. Hot chicken soup spilled everywhere, splattering across the pristine white tablecloth and splashing right onto the front of Evelyn's fine plum dress and golden sash. The loud crash of the bowl made the baby startle and cry instantly, her small eyes filling with big tears. But before Claire could even stand up to reach for a napkin, a loud crack echoed across the room. Evelyn's hand flew out and struck little Lily across her tiny arm in anger, making the infant scream in sudden pain and fear. The sheer shock of the moment made the room go totally silent except for the baby's frantic sobbing. Evelyn's face turned bright red as she grabbed a cloth and roughly wiped the soup off the baby's face with harsh, sharp movements.
Claire stood up so fast her dining chair scraped loudly against the hardwood floor. Her heart beat wildly in her chest as her hands began to shake with pure anger and disbelief. She stared at her mother-in-law, unable to process what had just happened in front of her eyes. She looked over at Mark, expecting him to jump up, stand in front of his mother, and protect his innocent child from any more harsh treatment. Instead, Mark slowly picked up a glass pitcher and poured cold water into his cup, refusing to look directly at either of them. His hands were steady, but his face looked pale and completely frozen in fear of upsetting his mother. Claire felt a cold knot tighten in her stomach as she realized her husband was going to act like nothing bad had happened at all. She stepped forward, her voice cracking as she demanded him to wake up and act like a real father right now.
Claire: YOU SHOULD SAY SOMETHING!
Mark: CLAIRE, DON'T MAKE A SCENE!
Claire did not listen to her husband's weak plea as she stepped around the corner of the long table. She reached out with firm arms and pulled her sobbing baby girl right out of Evelyn's cold grasp, cradling the child tight against her chest. Evelyn glared up at Claire, holding her wet plum dress with two fingers, looking entirely unbothered by the fact that she had just hit a helpless infant over spilled food. Mark finally stood up from his chair, raising his hands frantically as if Claire was the one causing all the trouble in the room. He stepped between his wife and his mother, trying to force Claire back toward the doorway so his mother would not have to hear any angry complaints during dinner. But Claire had reached her absolute limit after months of keeping her mouth shut just to keep the peace inside this cold house.
With her baby held securely in her left arm, Claire moved before Mark could stop her. She swung her right hand and slapped Mark hard across his cheek, the loud impact echoing through the big house. Mark stumbled back a step, his hand rushing up to cover his reddening face as his eyes widened in total disbelief. He stared at his wife as if she had suddenly turned into a complete stranger in front of him. Evelyn gasped loudly, rising from her chair with her hands clutched around her golden sash in fake horror. But Claire did not back down or apologize for what she had done. She leaned forward, getting right into Mark's shocked face, her voice low and furious as she pointed right at his chest while her baby sobbed softly against her shoulder.
Mark: WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU?!
Claire: YOU'RE STILL LOOKING AT YOUR MOTHER! NOT YOUR DAUGHTER!
Claire turned on her heel without waiting for another weak response from Mark or his mother. She walked out of the bright dining room, her boots clicking loudly against the clean floor as she headed straight for the front foyer. She grabbed her diaper bag off the small coat rack near the front door and pulled her car keys out of her purse. Mark came running down the long hallway, his hand still resting against his red cheek, his voice full of panic as he called out her name. He reached for her shoulder, trying to stop her from leaving the house with their baby on a quiet Sunday afternoon. But Claire spun around with such fierce eyes that he froze right in his tracks, dropping his arm back down to his side. She unlocked her car and stepped out into the warm afternoon air without looking back at him once.
She strapped little Lily into her rear-facing car seat with trembling fingers, checking every strap twice to make sure her baby was safe and comfortable. The little girl had stopped crying, but her small chest still heaved with soft hiccups as she held onto her mother's thumb. Claire closed the car door softly and sat in the driver's seat, resting her head against the steering wheel for a long moment to catch her breath. She looked in the rearview mirror and saw Mark standing near the open garage door, watching her with a lost expression while his mother stood far behind him on the front porch. Claire started the engine, shifted the car into drive, and pulled out of the long driveway, knowing deep in her heart that she could never go back to living the way she had before today.
