My Husband Locked My Daughter Away Until I Found Her Secret

The bright lights of the mansion kitchen bounced off the polished marble floors, but the room felt pitch black to me. On the wall, a massive American flag hung over the counter, completely out of place next to the nightmare unfolding in front of my eyes. Nurse Clara stood near the refrigerator, her green uniform rumpled and her hands trembling uncontrollably. Beside her, my father-in-law, Arthur, looked completely helpless, his face pale and sunken.

Clara: She locked Lily inside! She took the key and locked the cellar door!

Cora: What do you mean she locked her inside?! Lily has severe asthma!

Arthur: Cora, calm down... we're trying to figure out where she put it.

Cora: Figure it out?! My daughter can't breathe in damp spaces, Arthur! Where is Evelyn?!

Before Arthur could answer, Evelyn stepped into the kitchen wearing a silk maroon dress, a cold, arrogant smirk twisted across her face. She smoothed her skirt, casually inspecting her manicured fingernails while Nurse Clara wept near the sink.

Evelyn: Stop your screaming, Cora. The girl is simply taking a timeout to learn some discipline.

Cora: A timeout in the wine cellar?! She will suffocate down there, Evelyn!

Evelyn: She broke a four-thousand-dollar crystal vase in the parlor. She needs to understand that actions have consequences in this house.

Cora: She's six years old! Give me that key right now!

Evelyn: I don't take orders from my stepson's low-class wife. The key stays with me until I decide she has learned her lesson.

A heavy set of footsteps echoed down the grand hallway outside. My husband, David, came rushing through the kitchen entrance wearing his grey trench coat and leather gloves, fresh from a long flight. He took one look at Nurse Clara's panic, my tears, and Evelyn's smug smile, and his face turned completely dark with pure, terrifying rage. The secret Evelyn was trying to hide in that dark cellar was about to blow our entire family apart.
