The clicks of steel handcuffs sounded clear against the falling rain. Julian was forced down onto the wet driveway, screaming profanities into the night.
Julian: Mother, tell them! Tell them it was an accident! I am your son!
Clara wrapped a warm emergency blanket around Lily, staring down at the man she had raised.
Clara: My son died three days ago in that church, Julian. What stands here now is a criminal who belongs in a cage.
Veronica: I had nothing to do with this! He forced me to sign those papers!
Officer Martinez: Save your story for the federal prosecutor, lady. You’re being charged with conspiracy and child endangerment.
Marcus Hayes approached Clara, holding an umbrella over the trembling grandmother and child.
Marcus: An ambulance is waiting at the end of the gate to examine Lily, Clara. She’s going to be completely fine.
Clara: Thank you, Marcus. If you hadn't tracked the bank transfers...
Marcus: Your daughter-in-law was smart. Before she passed, she added a clause to the family trust fund requiring two forensic audits if Lily died before adulthood.
Clara: She always knew Julian was reckless with money.
Marcus: The court will immediately grant you sole legal and physical custody of Lily. Julian’s parental rights will be terminated by morning.
Lily looked up from Clara’s coat, her small fingers clutching Clara’s thumb with incredible strength.
Lily: Grandma, am I in trouble?
Clara dropped to her knees on the covered porch, pulling the little girl into a tight, warm embrace, tears mixing with the rain on her cheeks.
Clara: No, my sweet angel. You are never, ever going to be in trouble again.
Lily: Can we go home now? To your house with the strawberry garden?
Clara: Yes, baby. We are going straight home, and no one will ever hide you in the dark again.
Marcus opened the door to the warm sedan, gesturing for Clara and Lily to step inside.
Behind them, the flashing red and blue lights illuminated Julian Vance being pushed into the back of a police cruiser, his freedom and stolen empire stripped away forever.
Clara held Lily tight against her chest as the car pulled through the gates, leaving the dark cellar and its horrors far behind them.
