The morning sun rose bright and clear over Manhattan the next day. By eight-thirty, the news of Victoria Sterling's arrest was the front-page headline on every major newspaper in the country. Video footage of her shoving me over the balcony had accumulated millions of views overnight.
I walked into the grand lobby of the Sterling Global headquarters wearing a sharp black suit. Beside me was Lucas, fully reinstated in his suit and ear piece, accompanied by three senior security guards.
Lucas: All locks on the executive floor have been changed, Clara. Victoria’s personal belongings have been packed into boxes and handed over to the police as evidence.
Clara: What about her brother?
Lucas: He tried to enter the building at seven this morning to clear out her private safe. My team stopped him at the gate. The police took him in for questioning regarding the offshore transfers.
Clara: Good. He was just as guilty as she was.
We rode the private elevator up to the top floor. When the glass doors opened into the main boardroom, all twelve members of the board stood up and applauded. Standing near the head of the long mahogany table was Sarah, holding the original velvet-bound folder containing my father's true will.
Sarah: Miss Clara... the police forensic team verified the signatures on the will an hour ago. It's completely authentic.
Clara: Thank you, Sarah. You saved this family from complete ruin.
Sarah: I just wished I had spoken up sooner. Your father was a good man.
Clara: You spoke up when it mattered most. You'll always have a place in this company, Sarah.
I walked to the head of the table and sat down in the leather chair that had remained empty since my father’s passing. I looked around at the faces of the men and women who built this business alongside my family.
Clara: Ladies and gentlemen, the last six months have been a dark nightmare for Sterling Global. But today, the truth has triumphed. The stolen funds are being recovered, the conspirators are behind bars, and our company’s honor is restored.
Board Member Miller: Hear, hear! To CEO Clara Sterling!
Board Members: To CEO Sterling!
After the meeting concluded, I walked into my father’s old corner office. The heavy wooden desk was polished, and a framed photo of my father holding me as a little girl sat right in the center.
I walked over to the large floor-to-ceiling window, looking out over the sprawling city. Lucas knocked gently on the open door and stepped inside.
Lucas: District attorney just called, Clara. Victoria was officially denied bail. She’ll be staying at the county facility until her trial date.
Clara: Does she know she's facing twenty-five years to life?
Lucas: Her public defender told her ten minutes ago. Apparently she threw a chair through a window in the attorney room.
Clara: She always thought she was above the law. Now she'll have decades to think about what she did.
Lucas: How are you feeling, Clara?
Clara: For the first time in six months, I feel like I can breathe again.
I reached down and touched the USA flag pin pinned to my jacket lapel, the exact same pin my father wore every day of his life.
Clara: My father worked his entire life to build something honest. She tried to destroy it for greed. But we stopped her.
Lucas: We sure did. So, what's your first order of business as CEO?
Clara: First, we double the security budget. Second, we donate five million dollars to the local hospital's emergency trauma wing in honor of the paramedics who helped us last night.
Lucas: Sounds like a great start, Boss.
Clara: And third... take the afternoon off, Lucas. You earned it when you caught me in mid-air.
Lucas: Not a chance, Clara. I'm staying right here. Somebody has to make sure you don't go near any balconies today.
I laughed, a genuine, joyful laugh for the first time in what felt like forever. My father's legacy was safe, justice was served, and the evil stepmother who tried to break my family was finally behind iron bars where she belonged.
