The Breaking Point

My Deceased Granddaughter Was Hidden Alive Inside A Locked Luxury Estate

Julian reached the bottom step of the wooden stairs, pulling out his smartphone to check the flight itinerary.

Julian: Vance’s courier is ten minutes away with the medical van. Sit quietly on the floor and don't make a sound.

Clara’s fingers wrapped around the cold, textured steel of the iron tire iron.

Clara: Lily, darling, close your eyes. Put your hands over your ears and turn toward the brick wall.

Lily: Grandma, what are you doing?

Clara: Do it now, baby. Trust Grandma.

Julian heard the rustle of the blanket and turned around, scowling with irritation.

Julian: What did I say about talking down here?

Clara stepped forward with sudden speed, swinging the iron bar with all the strength in her sixty-four-year-old body.

The heavy steel struck Julian across his right kneecap with a sickening crack.

Julian: Aaargh! You crazy old bitch!

Julian collapsed against the wooden staircase, clutching his shattered knee as blinding agony ripped through his leg.

His smartphone flew out of his hand, shattering against the concrete floor into pieces.

Clara: Run, Lily! Grab the key ring from his jacket pocket!

Lily scrambled out from behind the water boiler, her bare feet slapping across the wet cement floor.

Julian: Don't you dare touch me, you little brat!

Julian lashed out with his left fist, striking Lily across the shoulder and knocking the small girl onto her back.

Lily: Grandma!

Seeing her grandchild struck erased every trace of fear from Clara’s mind.

She raised the iron bar again and slammed it down across Julian’s shoulder blade.

Julian: Stop! Stop hitting me! I’ll kill you, old woman!

Clara: You will never lay a hand on this child again as long as I draw breath!

Clara lunged forward, thrusting her hand directly into Julian’s open leather jacket and snatching the brass keychain.

Julian grabbed her wrist, his fingernails digging deep into her flesh, drawing thin ribbons of blood.

Julian: Give me those keys! I will drown you in this cellar!

Clara drove her sturdy leather orthopedic heel directly down onto Julian’s broken kneecap.

Julian let out a shrill, breathless scream of pure torment, releasing Clara’s arm and curling into the fetal position on the dirty floor.

Clara: Lily, take my hand! Climb the stairs right now!

Lily scrambled up the wooden steps on her hands and knees, tears pouring down her cheeks.

Clara rushed behind her, her lungs burning, using the key to unlock the padlock on the storm door latch.

Julian: Hector! Marcus! Help me! The old woman has gone crazy!

Julian dragged his ruined leg across the floor, clawing his way toward the bottom step of the staircase.

Julian: Don't let her open that door! The entire estate will be seized!

Clara turned the brass key in the heavy padlock. The cylinder clicked open with a satisfying metallic snap.

She threw the heavy wooden doors upward into the pouring night rain, cold air rushing down like a wave of freedom.

Clara: Out, Lily! Run toward the main driveway gates!

Lily squeezed through the opening into the wet grass, shivering as the freezing rain soaked her hospital gown.

Clara pulled herself out onto the muddy lawn, slamming the heavy cellar doors shut behind her.

She took the heavy brass padlock, looped it through the exterior security hasp, and clicked it locked from the outside.

Julian’s fists began pounding frantically against the wood from beneath the cellar doors.

Julian: Mother! Let me out! You can't leave me locked down here with a broken leg!

Clara: You wanted someone locked in the dark, Julian. Now you can see how it feels.
