Husband Kicked Her Out With Nothing Until Dad Left Everything

  1. Husband Kicked Her Out With Nothing Until Dad Left Everything

The cold marble floor of the estate foyer made Clara shiver through her thin cloth shoes. Outside, autumn rain lashed against the tall French glass doors, blurring the yellow estate lawns where she had pulled weeds by hand for seven years.

Julian: Just leave the key on the mahogany console table, Clara. Make this clean.

Clara: You are really doing this, Julian? Today? While the grass over your father’s grave has barely settled?

Julian: Do not bring my late father into this. We had a prenup. You knew what you signed seven years ago before we stood at the altar.

Clara: I signed that paper because I loved you, not your family’s trust fund. I nursed Henry every single night when your own mother refused to change his bed linens.

Julian adjusted the cuff of his tailored wool coat, refusing to meet her swollen, red eyes.

Julian: Mother is waiting upstairs with Evelyn. It is time for you to go. Your taxi is idling at the estate gates.

Victoria: Why is she still lingering in my foyer, Julian?

Victoria descended the winding staircase, her diamond rings clicking softly against the polished banister. Behind her walked Evelyn, clutching a fresh leather designer purse.

Victoria: I told the groundskeeper that any trash left on the front driveway by noon goes directly to the burn pile behind the stables.

Clara: I gave seven years of my youth to this family, Victoria. I saved your husband from choking in the dark while you were shopping in Paris.

Victoria: You were paid with a roof over your head, little girl. Now Julian has a real partner from a family of our own social standing. Take your small nylon suitcase and get off my private property before I call the local sheriff.

Evelyn: Julian sweetie, tell her to move. The driver says he won't wait in the rain much longer.

Julian: Clara, just walk out. Please. Don't make a scene.

Clara picked up the worn handle of her suitcase, her knuckles turning white under the glaring chandelier light.

Clara: Your father told me something the night he passed, Julian. He whispered it while you were out at the country club.

Julian paused, his fingers freezing on his gold wristwatch.

Julian: What did he say?

Clara: He said that greed always eats its own master. And that some debts cannot be settled with a cheap settlement check.

Victoria: Ridiculous nonsense from a senile old man! Driver, open the gate!

Clara turned her back on them, stepping out into the freezing downpour as the heavy iron front doors slammed shut behind her, unaware of the registered courier van speeding up the long gravel driveway.
