The bright summer sun flooded the hallway of the huge suburban home, casting long shadows across the polished hardwood floors. Leo stepped through the front door with a heavy leather briefcase in his left hand, feeling a deep sense of relief after a long week of business meetings across the country. He had tried calling his wife Grace three times during his flight, but every call went straight to her voicemail, which was completely unlike her. She was eight months pregnant with their first child and usually checked in every couple of hours just to hear his voice. Leo set his briefcase down on the entry table near the framed American flag and listened closely to the unnatural silence of the massive house.
He walked up the grand staircase, his leather shoes clicking against the oak steps, feeling a cold knot of anxiety form tight in his stomach. When he reached the master bedroom door, he reached out for the brass handle and pulled, but the heavy wooden panel did not budge at all. Leo frowned and jiggled the metal handle hard, realizing with a sudden shock that the lock had been engaged from the outside keyhole. Panic spiked sharp through his chest as he banged his open palm against the hard white wood of the bedroom door.
Leo: Grace! Are you in there? Grace, answer me right now!
A soft, weak moan echoed from the other side of the thick door, followed immediately by the faint, muffled sound of a tiny newborn baby crying out in distress. Leo felt his blood freeze in his veins as he took two steps back into the bright hallway, raised his right foot, and kicked hard against the lock mechanism. The cheap latch snapped open with a loud wood-cracking sound, and the heavy door swung open wide into the sunlit bedroom.
The air inside the master bedroom felt stifling and heavy, carrying the sharp copper smell of sweat and fresh blood. Grace was lying completely flat on the white cotton sheets, her face pale as linen and her dark hair soaked with perspiration. Tucked roughly into a thin blanket right beside her weakened body was a tiny newborn infant, its face red and crying softly into the stillness of the room. Leo dropped down onto his knees by the edge of the mattress, his hands trembling violently as he reached out to touch his wife's damp forehead.
Leo: Grace! What happened to you? Oh God, what happened here?
Grace opened her dry eyes slowly, her pupils unfocused and blurry as she looked up into her husband's terrified face. Her lips were cracked and bleeding, and she tried to raise her hand to touch his cheek, but her forearm lacked the strength to stay lifted. Leo caught her hand gently in his own, and his heart sank when he noticed dark purplish bruises wrapping around her delicate wrist like a harsh rope mark.
Grace: Leo... you came home. Thank God you came home.
Leo: Who did this to you? Where is the doctor? Why were you locked in this room?
Before Grace could answer his frantic questions, heavy, calm footsteps echoed down the bright hallway outside the bedroom door. Leo stood up slowly, turning around with his fist clenched tightly at his side as two familiar figures walked casually into the sunlit room. His mother, Eleanor, dressed in a sharp green designer dress, smoothed down her skirt with complete composure while his younger sister, Victoria, stood right behind her with a cool, bored expression on her face.
Eleanor: Don't make a scene, Leo. She's just being dramatic as usual.
Leo stared at his mother in absolute disbelief, his eyes wide as he looked back and forth between her calm expression and his wife's battered body on the bed. The sun beamed through the large floor-to-ceiling windows, highlighting every detail of the absolute horror in front of him. He could hear the soft cries of his newborn baby reaching out for comfort in the silent space between them.
