David took the crying baby from Sarah's arms to give his wife a break.
He cradled his small daughter gently against his chest until her crying stopped.
Sarah wiped the remaining moisture from her cheeks and stood up straight.
She felt a sudden wave of strength beside her supportive husband.
Sarah: I have tried for three years to earn your respect, Evelyn.
Evelyn: You don't deserve respect just because you married my son.
Sarah: I deserved common human decency, especially around your grandchild.
Evelyn: You are nothing but an outsider in this household!
David walked over to the entry table where the birthday cake sat waiting.
He picked up the heavy frosted cake, his eyes focused entirely on his mother.
He walked right back into the center of the brightly lit dining room.
David: If you cannot respect my family, you don't get to celebrate with us.
Evelyn: Put that cake back down on the table right now!
David: You ruined this dinner the second you put hands on my wife.
David suddenly tossed the entire frosted cake right onto the empty head-table spot.
The cake smashed flat with a loud splat, covering Evelyn's place setting in frosting.
Evelyn gasped in horror as white cream splattered across her green sweater.
Evelyn: Look what you just did to my nice clothes!
David: That is nothing compared to how you treated Sarah today.
The relatives gasps echoed softly through the high-ceilinged room.
No one had ever stood up to Evelyn with such bold determination before.
David: We are leaving right now, and we won't be back for holidays.
Evelyn: You can't cut me off from my only granddaughter!
David: Watch us set real boundaries until you get real help.
Sarah took her husband's hand tightly as they prepared to walk out.
Sarah: Happy birthday, Dad. We love you, but we have to go.
His father nodded quietly in understanding, feeling deeply sorry for the mess.
